Morning Reflection: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18).
Yesterday, I had a conversation with someone who is feeling this emptiness and loneliness very keenly. Despite attempts to connect with God in quiet time, the feelings remained. The above verse provides a profound truth that we can hold onto during our darkest hours.
We live in a world where feelings of emptiness and loneliness can often feel overwhelming. Whether it’s as a result of loss, hetred, disappointment, or isolation, these emotions can creep in unexpectedly, even when we think we’re doing well spiritually. It’s crucial to acknowledge that these feelings are part of the human experience. Let me share some biblical examples:
Job, After losing his family, wealth, and health, Job faced profound emptiness and despair. Yet, through his suffering, he maintained his faith in God and ultimately found restoration and deeper understanding (Job 30:20-22).
David, In many Psalms, David expressed feelings of abandonment and loneliness. For instance, in Psalm 22, he cries out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Despite this, David often returned to praise and trust in God, reminding himself of God’s faithfulness.
Elijah, Following his victory over the prophets of Baal, Elijah fled into the wilderness, feeling despondent and even asking God to take his life (1 Kings 19:4). God met him in his loneliness, providing nourishment and a gentle reminder of His presence.
Jeremiah, Known as the "weeping prophet," Jeremiah experienced deep sorrow while delivering God’s messages to a resistant people. He often expressed his anguish in the book of Lamentations but found hope in God’s faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23).
Jesus, In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus felt immense anguish before His crucifixion, pleading with God while bearing the weight of the world’s sins (Matthew 26:38). Even in His darkest hour, He sought solace in prayer.
These examples show that feelings of emptiness and loneliness are part of the human experience, even for the faithful. Here are some ways that can help us deal with emptiness and loniliness.
Sometimes, sharing your feelings with trusted friends can provide comfort and remind you that you are not alone. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Having a supportive community can help lift the weight of loneliness. Writing about your experiences, painting, drawing, or composing songs can be powerful ways to articulate and process your emotions. Write down your prayers, your struggles, and your praises. This practice allows you to see God’s faithfulness over time, building your faith.
David often poured out his heart in the form of psalms, and we can do the same. Keeping a gratitude journal helps you recognize the blessings in your life, however small, and foster a sense of fulfillment. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us to bring everything to God in prayer and thanksgiving.
Volunteering your time to help someone in need can shift your focus from emptiness to purpose and joy. Jesus taught us to love our neighbors, and serving others can remind us of our interconnectedness and the hope we can bring to one another.
In our loneliness, we must continue seeking God through prayer. Prayer is our lifeline; it connects us to the divine source of strength. Prayer is not just about speaking; it's also about listening. God longs to speak to our hearts. Additionally, diving into Scripture can provide guidance and comfort. Try exploring new passages or themes that resonate with your current feelings. God’s Word is alive and can speak to us in ways we never imagined.
In this week, let us hold onto the truth of Psalm 34:18. The Lord is indeed close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Trust in His presence and know that wholeness is possible.
