We do have some extra tips for you. If you are driving to Murchison Falls National Park from the south, you will pass through Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch. There is a rhino reserve there: the only place in Uganda where you can see them. It is a nice, easy stopover. You can also stop in the southern part of the park, in Budongo Central Forest Reserve. Murchison Falls National Park is famous for its rich and healthy wildlife. Most animals live in the northern part of the park. You can see lions, leopards, and hyenas. Lions are especially common here. If you miss them, you were probably relaxing too much in your safari vehicle. There are large herds of elephants, buffalo, and antelopes. Giraffes roam the plains, including the rare and endangered Rothschild giraffe. The Nile is home to enormous crocodiles, some growing up to seven meters long. Hippos are everywhere, both day and night. And there is more. The park hosts over 450 bird species. One of the highlights is the rare shoebill stork. For bird lovers, this park is a true paradise. During your visit, you do more than just watch animals. Your guide explains their behavior and daily life. This deeper understanding makes the safari even more special.

Queen Elizabeth National Park experiences a tropical climate characterized by two dry seasons and two rainy periods. Daytime temperatures typically range from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), with nighttime temperatures cooling slightly, especially in elevated areas near the Rwenzori Mountains. Humidity tends to stay high year-round, particularly around the Kazinga Channel and Maramagambo Forest.

Queen Elizabeth National Park can be visited year-round, but the best game viewing conditions occur during the dry seasons—June to September and December to February. These months feature clearer skies, shorter grass, and more reliable sightings of big game around water sources.

The wet seasons (March to May and October to November) transform the landscape into a lush, green paradise. Birding peaks during these months, and there are fewer tourists, which can make for a more private safari experience. However, some tracks may become slippery, and wildlife is more dispersed.

The weather patterns are shaped by the park’s diverse terrain, which includes crater lakes, savannah, wetlands, and lowland forests. Rainfall brings out vibrant foliage and active birdlife, while dry periods create optimal conditions for game viewing as animals gather around shrinking water sources.

Travelers should pack for a mix of sunshine and potential rain, even during the dry months, and prepare for early morning chills on game drives or boat cruises.

For classic big-game viewing, head to the Kasenyi Plains.

These open grasslands support thousands of Uganda Kobs, which in turn attract large prides of lions. You should embark on an early morning game drive to catch predators on the hunt.

The open scenery ensures you have a clear view of buffalo herds, elephants, and warthogs roaming the landscape.

To maximize your experience, visit the Kasenyi salt lake nearby, where you can often spot large flocks of flamingos during the migratory season. Because the plains serve as the primary breeding ground for the Uganda Kob, you will frequently witness intense territorial displays and rutting behavior.

This area provides the highest probability of spotting a leopard at dusk, as they often utilize the thickets bordering the plains for cover.
