BIHARWE ECLIPSE MONUMENT.

This historical monument is located in Mbarara District , western part of Uganda.

The monument was built in commemoration of the TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN that is said to have happened In the Great Lakes Region in 1520 AD.

The monument is one of the most important archeological sites in Africa. It's the only site that marks the location of a total eclipse of the sun that occured in 1520 AD.

The Biharwe monument features 3 pillars that represent the three Kings; Olimi, Ntare 1 and Nakibinge whose lives were drastically impacted by the eclipse. The fourth pillar has been omitted to signify the unrest caused by cattle raids, famine and tribal wars of this period.

On his way back to his Kingdom, when the eclipse occured, the King of Bunyoro, Olimi 1 Rwitamahanga was forced to abandon all his loot, which included cows, women and slaves that he looted from Rwanda during the reign of Umwami Ruganzu II Ndori. The loot that was left behind was inherited by Ntare I Nyabugarobwera, who was the King of Nkore at that time. The cows were named " Empenda ya Munoni" and "Enduga Mwiguru" which is translated as cows from heaven.

It's said that since the King of Bunyoro couldn't go back to his Kingdom empty handed, he decided to invade Buganda Kingdom under the reign of Ssekabaka Nakibinge.

During the battle in Bulemezi, Ssekabaka Nakibinge and his commander Kibuuka were killed and Mulondo succeeded the throne.

This place is a MUST visit for anyone interested in astrology and culture.

UGANDA'S ETHNICITY: PART 3

THE BATWA

The BATWA who are also referred to as the ‘Keepers of the Forests’, are believed to have been the first inhabitants of the East African Great Lakes Region.

They are found around the protected forest reserves of Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks in South western Uganda (Kisoro, Kanungu and Kabale districts).

They lived exclusively as hunters and gatherers for over 1000 years until recently. The forests also provided herbs for medicine which would help cure common ailments. .

The Batwa built ground shelter in form of small huts made of reeds and leaves. They are also known for their short stature.

A man seeking marriage had to build a small hut next to his parents’ as a sign to show his adulthood. The young man would then propose to the parents of the girl he is interested in.

The Parents of the girl would send the young man to bring a squirrel which is very jumpy and very difficult to hunt. Honey and wild meat were occasionally provided as gifts to the bride’s family.

The Batwa had their own spiritual practices and worshipped a deity called A’an and some of them continue pursuing their traditional practices upto date because it is centered on the Forest.

The Twa tribe usually placed a bow and arrow in the palms of their newborns as a sign of protection

The Batwa people guide park visitors and those interested in cultural tourism through the forests on this trail while teaching them about prehistoric collecting and hunting customs.

More history awaits you upon your visit.

UGANDA'S ETHNICITY: PART 2

THE NUBI

The Nubians originated from the present day South Sudan and spread out to various East African countries due to the involvement with the British Army as colonial rule enforcers (mercenaries) in the 1820s.

They're commonly found in the regions of present day Bombo in Uganda, and Kibera in Kenya.

In the 1800s, the AngloEgytian Sudan was jointly administered by the British and the virtually autonomous Ottoman Turkish province of Egypt.

A religious leader called Maldi led a rebellion against the British Egyptian government. After the British victory, Sudanese soldiers who had agreed to join the British forces were rewarded with lands in Kibera, Kenya and other areas.

The Nubians speak NUBI Creole Arabic which predominantly made of Arabic.

The ancestors of the NUBI people were Muslims before they identified as a coherent tribe. In the early 1800s, the Ottoman muslims would raid into southern Sudan for slaves, forcibly converting them and indoctrinating them with Islam and then train them as soldiers.

In the 1995 Uganda constitution, the NUBI were recognised as an indigenous ethnic group and citizens.

The NUBI were also well known to be prominent warriors. They were blessed with skills of using the bow and arrow perfectly. The women specialised in unique hand craft and hair dressing.

Marriage in a Nubian setting is called a Nikah (tying the note) and it is conducted at a mosque or a girl’s home where it is led by a sheikh(elder).

Uganda is blessed with a wide ethnicity blend with rich cultures. Heritage awaits you.

AMABERE GA NYINAMWIRU

Amabere ga Nyinamwiru, translated as "Breasts of Nyinamwiru" , also known as NYAKASURA Caves is located in FORT PORTAL, Western Uganda.

The rock caves were named after Nyinamwiru who was a very beautiful daughter of King Bukuku of the Batembuzi Dynasty from which the Tooro and Bunyoro Kingdoms originated.

The legend has it that Nyinamwiru's breasts were cut off by his father and thrown into the caves. This was due to her refusal to get married to a man her father had chosen for her.

The breast-like features in the caves, dripping a whitish substance are believed by the locals, that those are the breasts of Nyinamwiru flowing.

However, geography explains that those are stalactites and stalagmites formed as a result of chemical reactions in the area.

On your visit to the caves, you will also enjoy other features like the crator lakes (Lake Kigere, Lake Wabikele and Lake Saaka), Nyakasura waterfalls and the incredible footprint of a demi god.
