When a giraffe bends its head down to the ground, it has to use an awkward, wide-legged stance because its neck isn’t quite long enough to reach the water’s surface.

The Blood Pressure Challenge:

High pressure: Giraffes run double the blood pressure of humans so blood can travel two meters straight up to the brain.

Gravity rush: Lowering the head sends a massive surge of blood rushing downward toward the head.

The “wonderful net”: A special network of small blood vessels in the upper neck called the rete mirabile expands to absorb the pressure surge so the brain doesn’t flood or faint.

One-way valves: Elastic jugular veins feature special valves that stop blood from flowing backward into the brain.

Coming Back Up

Preventing blackouts: When the head lifts back up, stored blood in the neck vessels rushes back to the heart, helping trigger a strong beat to push oxygenated blood back up to the brain.

Dramatic head-shake: Many giraffes give a sharp head-shake after drinking to help reset blood flow and pressure regulation.

Vulnerability: Bending down makes them slow and clumsy, leaving them wide open to predators like lions. Because of this risk, they only need to drink water every few days, getting most of their hydration from plants.
