Tell a Friend

Gorillas, the largest living primates, make their homes in central and east Africa. They function in a well-developed social structure and often exhibit behavior and emotions similar to the human experience, including laughter and sadness. Poaching, disease and habitat destruction remain threats for gorillas, and WWF is working to designate new protected areas where populations can thrive.
Uganda is one of the countries with a large number of them..

The Spotted Hyena in Uganda..
is known to be the only member of the genus Crocuta which is a laughing hyena and it exists in Uganda where it is visited on safaris in Uganda and other part of southern Sahara. It falls under the Animalia Kingdom, Chordata Phylum, Mammalia Class, Carn
ivora Order, Hyaeninane family, Crocuta Genus and Crocuta crocuta genus. The spotted Hyena is given by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as the least concerned due to its extensive distribution with the counts of 27,000 – 47,000 although these numbers are decreasing due to habitat loss.
The Spotted Hyena species are thought to have originated from Asia and were densely present in the parts of Europe dating to one million year ago and towards the end of the Pleistocene. The dotted Hyena is considered as the largest of all Hyaenidae and its difference from others is drawn by vaguely bear like build, spotted pelt, rounded ears, fewer ni***es, prominent mane, pseudo p***s among females and the dual purpose dentition as it can be witnessed by travelers on a safari in Uganda

The Spited Hyena is considered to be successful creatures as it has managed to thrive in large numbers in Africa and this is attributed to opportunism and adaptability. The Spotted Hyena is capable hunting and scavenging and with the capacity to swallow and digest the bone, skin or any other animal product. As a result, a spotted Hyena is considered to be making effective use of animal matter than other carnivores.
In Uganda, the spotted Hyena can be encountered in the National Parks of Queen Elizabeth NP, Kidepo Valley and Lake Mburo which are always visited by travelers undertaking

THIS WEEK, we will look at the beauty of Birds..

The parrot.
Though there are many types of parrots, all parrot species have a few traits in common. For example, to be classified as a parrot, the bird must have a curved beak, and its feet must be zygodactyl, which means there are four toes on each foot with two toes that point forward and two that point backward.

Size

Because the parrot order includes so many different species, parrot sizes vary widely. Parrots can range in size from about 3.5 to 40 inches (8.7 to 100 centimeters) and weigh 2.25 to 56 ounces (64 g to 1.6 kg), on average. The world's heaviest type of parrot is the kakapo, which can weigh up to 9 lbs. (4 kg). The smallest parrot is the buff-faced pygmy parrot, which is only about 3 inches (8 cm) tall and weighs just 0.4 ounces (10 g).

Habitat

Most wild parrots live in the warm areas of the Southern Hemisphere, though they can be found in many other regions of the world, such as northern Mexico. Australia, South America and Central America have the greatest diversity of parrot species.

Orangutans....
Orangutans are more solitary than the other great apes in Africa. Adult males have large home ranges overlapping with one to several females. Females live with their offspring in discrete home ranges that overlap with other adult females. Adult males have interactions only with females in estrus. Occasionally sub-adult individuals form groups, however these do not last into adulthood. Females reach maturity around 14 years of age and orangutans exhibit the longest inter-birth intervals of around 8 years, and infants are completely reliant on their mothers until around 2 years old. Males reach sexual maturity between 8 and 15 years however do not show secondary sexual characteristics and long-calls until around 15-20 years. Males listen to the movements of each other with the help of their vocalizations that can be heard from afar and when meeting they show threatening display to each other. Territorial fights depend on the presence of females, though they are very rare and displaying behavior is more frequent

Write something..
The Nile Crocodiles....

One of the largest of all crocodilians, the Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is a supremely adapted aquatic predator, with a streamlined body, a long, powerful tail, webbed hind feet, and long, powerful jaws, ideally suited for grabbing and holding onto prey. The eyes, ears and nostrils are located on top of the head, allowing the crocodile to lie low in the water, almost totally submerged and hidden from prey. A special valve at the back of the throat allows the mouth to be opened to catch and hold prey underwater without water entering the throat.

In addition to a good sense of smell and excellent night vision, the Nile crocodile also possess sensory pits in the scales along the side of the jaw, used to detect movement and vibrations in the water. Like all true crocodiles, the enlarged fourth tooth on the lower jaw is clearly visible when the mouth is closed, a feature which distinguishes this group from other crocodilians, such as alligators.

Uganda reptile village!!
Did you about this beautiful place in Uganda????
Uganda Reptile Village. It is located in Entebbe, Katabi in Bunono Village - 3km off Entebbe-Kampala Highway next to a large Papyrus Swamp adjoining Lake Victoria.

Species seen included Gaboon Viper, these snake’s are very lazy and just lie on the forest floor waiting for a victim to come close. Their intricate camouflage allowing them to blend into the surrounding vegetation, looking just like fallen leaves. Another species the Egyptian Cobra kills more people in Africa than any other species, and is particularly aggressive. Other snakes included the Green Mamba a species which is highly venomous and spends most of its time in trees and bush while another snake the Green Tree Snake looks identical to the Mamba but is not venomous and unfortunately gets killed because of its colour and arboreal habits.

As well as snakes we were shown Chameleons, their ability to change their colour to match their surroundings shown well with the Side-striped Chameleon exhibits which were both green and brown depending on which part of the bush they were on. Also present were Crocodiles and three species of Tortoise one individual, a Leopard Tortoise was estimated to be 83 years of age and this was reflected in its size, very large.
