Suprise visitor at Bush Lodge. An elephant wandered right into the yard, and instead of scrambling for cover, everyone grabbed their cameras because when you’re staying on the edge of the wild in Queen Elizabeth National Park, this is just another day. 😂

No fences, no glass, just a front-row seat to Africa doing what it does best.

This is wrestling practice, not warfare 🦍

What looks like a scuffle is actually how young gorillas grow up. Play-fighting the wrestling, chasing and mock biting teaches juveniles to control their strength, read social cues and build the bonds that hold a family group together for life. Researchers have even found gorillas play a version of tag, taking turns as chaser and chased. Watch closely and you’ll catch their “play face”: mouth open, lip relaxed, no teeth bared the universal gorilla sign for “we’re just having fun.”

This is exactly the kind of moment Gorilla trekking can reward you with. Once your group reaches a habituated family (one gradually accustomed to human presence over years of patient, careful visits by trackers and researchers), you will spend a time observing them at close range not posed, not performing, just living their ordinary family life right in front of you. Some days that means a quiet feeding session, other days it’s front-row seats to chaos like this. Either way, no two treks are ever quite the same.
