Gorilla Tracking Uganda and Rwanda

Gorilla Tracking Uganda and Rwanda Coming face-to-face with a mountain gorilla is one of the most memorable wildlife encounters in Afri See you in Uganda!

Throughout the past 40 years, monumental efforts have been made to save the critically endangered mountain gorillas, and for many of us the chance of seeing them in our lifetime, other than in zoos, still remains a remote possibility. However, if you have ever dreamed of the magical experience of interacting with these great beasts, and seeing them as close up as the photos in wildlife magazines,

your chance has come. A visit to this special place will be an experience that your children's children will talk about, and space is extremely limited. Only 24 permits to see the gorillas are issued per day, and they are divided into three groups of eight, which makes your experience a once in a lifetime opportunity and ensures that you will share this moment only with those closest to you. "When you realize the value of all life, you dwell less on what is past and concentrate more on the preservation of the future.

UWEC - Zoo Mbale Welcomes Animals

In preparation for the official inauguration of the first regional satellite zoo in Mbale, Uganda Wildlife Authority is carrying out an animal translocation activity to UWEC-Mbale Zoo, the Mt. Elgon Conservation Area.

The exercise, which commenced towards the end of May 2026, aims to relocate a total of 16 animal species in its initial phase. So far, 2 lions, a zebra, a waterbuck, an ostrich, and peacocks are now freely roaming within the semi-wild ecosystem of this center.

UWEC-Mbale Zoo aims to close the distance gap for local tourists and schools that have been traveling from the eastern regions of Uganda to the Entebbe Zoo for tourism and conservation education services.

Dr. Victor Musiime, Senior Veterinary Doctor at UWA and leader of the expert team for the translocation, confirmed that all the animals are in good condition and adapting well to their new environment.

By decentralizing conservation education services through such satellite zoos, wildlife is brought closer to people, enabling them to connect with, understand, and take action for its conservation.

Uganda Wildlife Authority look forward to the official opening on 12th June 2026.

people with disabilities do trek to see mountain gorillas, and tour operators in places like Rwanda and Uganda have developed ways to make it accessible.

The main method is usually a sedan chair or stretcher system:
• A sturdy seat is attached to poles.
• A trained team of porters carries the guest through the forest and steep terrain.
• Porters also help over muddy paths, roots, and narrow trails.

Some parks also:
• assign visitors to gorilla families that are easier to reach,
• provide walking sticks and extra support staff,
• arrange shorter trekking routes when possible.

A lot of travelers who are older, injured, or use wheelchairs have successfully done this experience. It still can be physically demanding because the forests are mountainous and wild, but guides plan carefully around the person’s mobility needs.

The gorillas themselves are usually calm around humans because the trekking groups follow strict rules about distance and behavior. The experience is closely supervised by park rangers.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a guided hike through rainforest to observe wild mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. It’s one of the country’s most famous wildlife experiences and usually takes place in two protected areas:
• Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
• Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The basic idea is:
1. You join a small group with park rangers early in the morning.
2. Guides track a specific gorilla family using signs, sounds, and previous sightings.
3. You hike through dense forest — sometimes for 1 hour, sometimes much longer depending on where the gorillas are.
4. Once you find them, you usually get one hour to quietly observe them from a safe distance.

People do it because seeing mountain gorillas up close is pretty unforgettable. You might watch babies playing, silverbacks guarding the group, or families grooming and interacting naturally.

Here’s what it typically looks like:

A few useful things to know:
• You need a gorilla trekking permit, which can be expensive and often sells out months ahead.
• Treks can be physically challenging because of steep, muddy terrain.
• Rangers enforce strict rules to protect the gorillas, including distance limits and mask/health precautions if needed.
• Uganda is one of the few places on Earth where endangered mountain gorillas can still be seen in the wild.

Visitors are expected to remain about 7 meters (23 feet) away from the gorillas to reduce the risk of spreading human diseases. However, gorillas are curious animals and sometimes move closer to visitors on their own.
