Uganda’s waterways are home to two of the most fascinating fishing specialists in the bird world—each with a completely different personality and style!

​In Episode 4 of our series, we’re comparing the Pied Kingfisher and the Malachite Kingfisher!

​🖤 The Pied Kingfisher: A bold, black-and-white aerial acrobat that hovers effortlessly over open water before making precision dives. Look closely at their chest—males wear two black stripes, while females wear just one!

​💙 The Malachite Kingfisher: A miniature, iridescent jewel of bright cobalt blue and fiery orange. Measuring just 12 cm long, it perches quietly on papyrus stalks, striking in a flash when a tiny fish swims past!

If I were giving someone advice before their first trip to Uganda, these are a few things I'd tell them. 🇺🇬

1️⃣ Don't rush your itinerary.
Uganda has a lot to offer, and trying to see everything can take away from actually enjoying the experience.

2️⃣ Leave some room for spontaneity.
Some of your favourite memories might come from something that wasn't even on the plan.

3️⃣ Talk to people.
The landscapes may get you here, but the people and the stories can become part of what makes the experience special.

4️⃣ Try the local food.
Don't come all this way and only eat what you're already familiar with. Try a rolex 😂

5️⃣ Look beyond the famous attractions.
Yes, come for the wildlife, gorillas, waterfalls and incredible landscapes—but also pay attention to everything happening in between.

One thing I've come to appreciate about Uganda is that the beauty isn't always where you expect it to be.
Sometimes it's right beside the road.

Save this if Uganda is somewhere you're hoping to visit someday.

The more I think about travel, the more I realise that the places we remember aren't always the ones we planned for.

Sometimes it's the roadside stop.
The random conversation.
The beautiful view you weren't expecting.
That little place you almost didn't stop at.

I've had moments like that while moving around Uganda, and they're a reminder that the experience isn't always found on the itinerary.

Sometimes you just have to leave a little room for the journey to surprise you.
