Located near the edge of Kibale National Park, this remarkable wetland sanctuary is considered a must-visit destination for nature lovers and birdwatchers alike.

A guided 4.5 km swamp walk takes visitors through an important wildlife corridor connecting the wetlands to Kibale Forest. The walk lasts approximately 3 hours and offers an immersive experience through lush vegetation, papyrus swamps, and local community areas.

Known as the “Home of the Great Blue Turaco,” the sanctuary is a true paradise for bird enthusiasts, with over 200 recorded bird species. Visitors may spot Hornbills, Turacos, Parrots, Cranes, Kingfishers, and several swamp endemic species.

The sanctuary is also home to eight species of primates, including the Black-and-White Colobus Monkey, Red Colobus Monkey, Red-tailed Monkey, Grey-cheeked Mangabey, Olive Baboon, L’Hoest’s Monkey, Vervet Monkey, and Blue Monkey, making the walk an unforgettable wildlife experience.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is a unique wildlife program introduced in Uganda by the Uganda Wildlife Authority in 2014. This exclusive experience is only available in the Bwindi Conservation Area and offers visitors a rare opportunity to spend extended time with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

Each habituation group is limited to a maximum of four participants per day, ensuring a personalized and intimate encounter. Guests are accompanied by a professional team of trackers and rangers who lead the trek through the forest. Once the gorilla family is located, visitors are allowed to spend up to four hours observing and interacting with the gorillas — making this experience ideal for wildlife lovers and photography safaris.

During the visit, ranger guides provide detailed explanations about each gorilla family member, their characters and hierarchy, their behaviors, and communication methods. Guests are also taught how to safely mimic and vocalize gorilla sounds, creating a deeper and more educational experience.

Due to the limited number of permits issued daily, this activity must be booked well in advance.

Important preparation information:

The trek takes place in high-altitude areas (above 2,000 meters above sea level)

The experience begins early in the morning at 6:30 AM

Participants should carry:

At least 2 liters of drinking water per person

A packed lunch

Good walking/hiking shoes

Rain gear (Bwindi is a tropical rainforest)

Walking sticks (to ease movement on steep terrain)

This adventure offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect with gorillas in a truly meaningful and immersive way.
