The Mountain Gorilla is a subspecies of Gorilla that resides in the mountain ranges of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. Mountain Gorillas live in forests at elevations of 8,000 to 13,000 feet. Thanks to their head-to-toe covering of thick fur, they can thrive comfortably in these cold (sometimes sub-zero) climates.
This species has not had it easy, struggling to survive through countless years of war, poaching, habitat destruction, and disease. Additionally, as human populations increase and build residences higher up these mountain ranges, Mountain Gorillas are forced to retreat into colder and more unforgiving elevations, leading to higher mortality rates.
Thankfully, due to the efforts of multiple conservation organizations, Mountain Gorillas are now experiencing a second (and much deserved) lease on life!
Studies show that the Mountain Gorilla population in Virunga Massif, has increased to 604; up from 480 in 2010. This means the total wild gorilla population has passed over 1,000!
Itβs extremely gratifying to see positive numerical data, resulting from the determination and hard work of animal advocates.
