It was supposed to be a story of hope.

At least that's what Orlando von Einsiedel thought when he arrived in Virunga National Park to make a documentary about adorable mountain gorillas and brave park rangers. Eastern Congo was emerging from two decades of war and Virunga, Africa's oldest and most biodiverse preserve, was being rebuilt — a beacon of hope in a country ravaged by violence.

But things did not go quite as planned. When an armed rebellion broke out, Orlando suddenly found himself in the middle of warfare.

Meanwhile, Soco International, a British oil company, was beginning exploration within the park, in spite of the park's status as a World Heritage Site. Virunga, the documentary Orlando eventually made, is a contender for Best Documentary at today's Oscars.

It is the story of a battle: park rangers against Big Oil, David vs. Goliath, a lost cause, but a cause worth fighting for nonetheless.
