RHINOS RETURN TO KIDEPO VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, UGANDA
After 43 years of absence, rhinos have officially returned to Kidepo Valley National Park, marking a major milestone in Uganda’s conservation efforts.
The translocation was carried out by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, with support from the Government of Uganda, local communities, and conservation partners. The reintroduced species, the Southern White Rhino, were moved from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
Tourists visiting Kidepo can now witness rhinos in the wild once again, alongside the park’s diverse wildlife, enhancing its appeal as one of Africa’s most authentic safari destinations.
According to UWA, the two rhinos are adapting well to their new environment. They have already established a routine, including identifying a watering point and grazing normally within their designated area.
The return of rhinos has sparked excitement among local communities in Karenga, many of whom had only heard stories of these animals from previous generations. There is growing optimism that this development will boost tourism and bring economic opportunities to the region.
UWA has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rhinos through advanced monitoring technology and the recruitment of additional rangers. These efforts aim to ensure the safety of the animals, support population growth, and create a sustainable and thriving ecosystem within the park.
