Guess who we just found. A female ground hornbill that originates from Southern Africa.
You can tell the gender by looking at the wattle, the fleshy part of the bird's throat. That of a male hornbill is completely red/orange and violet blue for the female.

The global birding weekend had us discover Namalusu Island, a hidden gem located on lake Victoria about 5-15 minutes from the mainland at Portbell, Luzira. We took a three hour walk through the lush green trees and swampy vegetation and we were able to see 24 different bird species some of which included the Hamerkop, Pied kingfisher, Black crake, Broad-billed roller, Ray chested cuckoo and Hadada ibis among others. Birding is really an exciting activity that requires patience and active listening since it's not obvious to find birds perched closeby. At some point we had to stop, listen and follow the bird whistles and even go ahead to mimic bird sounds so the birds could come closer for better viewing.
