A blend of travel and agro-tourism.

As a boutique travel company, Kyambura Safaris endeavours to give a full package experience of its customers. On this occasion, at Dinner, while at in Murchison Falls National Park, I mentioned it to our guests that on our way to Kampala, just a few kilometres to Kiboga Town and within Kyankwazi district, I know an organisation; that is doing an amazing job. They teach community members the mechanics of ; Someone called it "Farming the God's way"
This was after Albert and team served very juice fruits and we got talking food and agriculture. In my earlier life, I spent close to a decade working for and so, I know a thing or two about agriculture.
Unanimously, they all agreed that we should indeed spend at least an hour at the demonstration farm.
The superlatives were exhausted; amazing, fantastic, excellent, wonderful....It was a time well spent looking at the kitchen gardens, a blend of herbs and vegetables, tapping and making use of run off water, mulching, intercropping and intentional chaos away from monoculture.
Allan and his team have outdone themselves.

One of my acquaintances said; "How can it be that you have nothing to say or even to write? We know you can always say something meaningful to us" Another said; "Aggrey, I look up to you because, man, you cannot lack words to write on any subject."
I forgive you two because the process that I go through to have something meaningful to say or write is rough.

Today, I come wholly to share that I am forever grateful. One person I met 23 years ago and has now become a wonderful big sister says; "You are pathetically thankful. Why?" It was not until Julie Nabwire visited my village of Kichwamba Nyakashozi, Nyabubaare No.2 in Bunyaruguru (Bunyaruguru Pictorial) in present day Rubirizi District, where I was born 48 years ago that she understood and appreciated why I am always thankful. So, on my birthday, which fell two days ago, I could only come here and share with you that I am utterly thankful.

I share a birth month with one of my sons; Ntambi and therefore, we cut the same cake. On the cake, my partner Judith Judithehotone instructed the cake lady to write the words; "The family's world" on my side and on Ntambi's side; "The Family's Saviour." She planned this and executed it with the children. I think it is a huge expectation or even to know that these fellows think I am their world! To look behind and there are 8 human beings who think you are their world is massive.

Again, looking back at the journey of 48 years, I can only be thankful and probably would sing 's song "Ani yali Amanyi?" which, simply translates as; "Who Knew?" And, he answers his question as; "Okujjako Mukama Katonda" which, translates as; "It can only be God"

Looking at the turns and twists in my life, even when I sometimes have my doubts, I admit, it can only be God. I have doubted God so many times but then, when I see the amazing things that have happened in my life, I am jolted to accept there is a Superior Being. I have had a fair share of a series of tests where He proves over and over again that I am nothing without Him. I may not be in the habit of Public Display of God (PDG) but if you knew a little of me, you would believe me if I tell you, it can only have been God.

So, what lies ahead for me?
I will, just like the SANKOFA bird (Please about the SANKOFA Theory), I am carrying with me a delicate egg (my life) and therefore, I have got to take care of it. I look up to Paul Messina and his lovely wife Kathy Carella Messina who have great leg mileage. I will be walking and where I can climb mountains (literary and figuratively). I can only look back in the past but not dwell there. I will look back to pick lessons.

I will look back so that I ensure I have carried along with me my meaningful relationships with me. I will also carry with me good memories. I am tempted to name names but I will not manage. However, allow me to express my gratitude to friends of . I will in the coming days post him here. You know the journey we walked in 2017 to just a few years ago. He is turning 19 this November and taller than me! Isn't God amazing?

So, what did I tell my children when they asked me to say something? That I will continue dance. And I danced for them! That no matter how big they will grow, I will continue to tell them; "I love you" That my "I love you" was not when they were little. It is true and it will continue for the rest of my life even when they get their own children. I love them every day, Boys are my heroes and girls are my sunshine.

It is a lie for someone to say; "I am self-made" later alone businesses. When Naalya Motel finally becomes a household brand in Uganda, forget the crap that we are self-made. We are an aggregate of everyone's brick as this story by my big brother Philip Matogo is about building legacies of reading in our 'literary desert' that Uganda was once christened in the 60s. I am sweetly humbled by this bwana Phil. You really have the license to Phil. We are making our small contribution in building our Uganda. People, come to Naalya Motel's open spaces and read as you enjoy a cuppa of coffee. We now have our own brand; Kyambura Safaris . And it goes down well with your favourite Katogo. Thank you Daily Monitor, thank you Uncle Ben for nurturing this dream Benmak Savior as we step into the 5th of Naalya Motel! And to our customers and clients who believed in us, thank you. Mwene Bikeira thank you for starting , who are the regular patrons, my OBs of St. and , thank you for choosing us to be your home.

To Ndungi's friends, we know ourselves really. He has cyber aunts, uncles and grannies all over the world. I want to share with you that we have an Aviator (his word) in the making. We aced the Uganda Secondary School Examinations codenamed UCE with a sweet 20 aggregates in 8 subjects though he sat for 10. And so PCM/Computer it is with a 4 in Physics, 2 in Chemistry and 2 in Mathematics. If he was inclined to the Arts like Julius Mucunguzi, he would still be in good stead with HLD/G with the scores of 2 in history, 3 in Literature, 4 in Divinity (or Religious Education) and Distinction 2 in Geography.

I have gone against his passionate desire of being so private. He tells me, the cancer treatment makes one very reflective" and he wants that to remain in the past. Lydia Bujara and Ann Hatton please share. He is also turning out a fine young man with a high sense of fashion.

Dale Robinson, Heidi Gramlich Bryson, Eseza Catherine Byakika, Maria-Lovence Tusingwire Jorgensen Philip Brownbill, in two years' time we will be knocking on your doors for the choice of an aviation school. I chose to include a 1982 picture of my own dad to have the 3 generations in one post. Maria-Lovence Tusingwire Jorgensen, you know when this black and white picture was taken. Bukuru ni nungi.

So, the two of us share birth month; September. His comes 9 days later. Mine falls on the 17th and his on the 26th.
Thus post is about me making it to another year! I looked forward to this new year. But something bizarre happened 2 days to the birthday. I am happy I am alive and I give Glory to God. This year is a true turning point. I have had several turning points in my life, but probably this near end of life is the mother of all. I truly got to commit myself to God. I confessed and professed. I realised life is a fleeting shadow and it can end in seconds. More than ever before, I want to do the right thing. And I will continue to search and ask God to guide me to see that I do what is right with Him. I hadmy questions about God. They are now all answered. And the answers came through 2 days to my birthday. Probably, on my birthday day, my body would have been buried. But He chose that it will not be on that day. He used people to see that I may go on. Our staff at Naalya Motel ensured I live and Judithehotone Judith drove to TMR hospital faster than she will ever drive maybe. I have no questions about God. They were all answered. He is neither white or black. He is God. May each one of us get to know God their way. May God may it so easy for you to know Him. I think I was hard for Him and so, it had to be a harder way. May He make it easy for you. Happiest birthday to me, though belatedly, 12 days later. And I am proud to have been born in no other place but , the most beautiful place on earth that I will ever know.

*Destinations: – Exploring the Stone City of Jinja*
Original story;
https://www.watchdoguganda.com/op-ed/20230801/157591/bunyaruguru-dispatch-destinations-exploring-the-stone-city-of-jinja.html

In the last 6 months, I have had more inquiries on exploring Jinja City and Murchison Falls. It is interesting to note that many residents in Kampala, Wakiso including Entebbe, Mpigi and Mukono have not taken time to travel to or stay in Jinja for a night. One person had this to say;

“I can truly tell you, I have never spent even an hour in Jinja. And yet, everyone is talking about Jinja. Other than being a former industrial hub? What is there? People are waxing over that bridge. We know electricity is generated there. What has it got to offer? I have driven through and maybe stopped for a break at Igar fuel station for a snack and coffee;”

She is not alone. While other towns have claimed they are the tourism cities of Uganda, Jinja silently is becoming the premier destination to be over the weekend. In fact, if you want to stay in Jinja over the weekend, you may fail to get where to stay if you are a typical Ugandan traveller.

Okay, what is a typical Ugandan traveller? A typical Ugandan traveller will drive from here to Gulu or Arua or Mbarara without knowing where they will stay. And then spend another one or two hours rotating around and turning to every signpost and asking if they have accommodation and then, become abusive if the different places are either out of their pocket range or are full. If you are the kind of traveller, Jinja will teach you a lesson. You may end up driving back to Lugazi or staying in Mbiko, close to 7km out of the city.

What to do while in Jinja:

I am probably one of the few who think that the flooding of Budhagali (Bujagali) Falls opened up Jinja. Jinja was equal to Budhagali Falls and Budhagali (Bujagali) Falls was equal to Jinja! After visiting these falls, many travellers believed that was all. With the flooding of these falls, other falls were ‘discovered’ such as Busowoko Falls, which are just less 20km downstream in Budondo Sub County.

I think they are the most spectacular next to Itanda Falls. Busowoko Falls offers the best hydrotherapy experience. They are not as deep and noisy as its cousin Itanda Falls further down. And they are easily accessed from the Easterly side of the river. And, while you enjoy your water massage, several kayakers will be rafting by in their inflated boats. Entrance to the falls is a paltry Ush.5,000 for adults and Ush.2,000 for children. While a whole day hydrotherapy/message is Ush.30,000. You can take a whole package that includes tubbing at Ush.70,000. And there is a mini-restaurant from which you can order for chips/fish among other limited offerings.

There are two options for Bungee-jumping while in Jinja. There is one within or next to Nile Resort Jinja opposite Kimaka Military College. From here, you can order for horse-riding and quad-biking. You can bungee-jump for Ush.250,000, horse ride for an hour at not more than Ush.150,000 and quad-bike for an hour at about Ush.190,000. You can kayak the Nile or what is commonly known as white water rafting. The cost depends on the time (from 4-6 hours), including transportation from Kampala, meals before and after kayaking, and transfer back to Kampala. There are many water activities on the Nile, including biking the Nile. We have not talked about the boat cruises to the source of the Nile and a little peek into the expansive Lake Victoria. Water activities in Jinja would be a separate story of its own, while forest bathing and walks within Mabira Forest offer another independent experience. Just talk to your agent or tour guide on what you wish to have.

Ziplining over the Griffin Falls and Archery. This is another experience that tests one’s adrenaline. At just Ush.100,000 you will have a two-hour ziplining experience through the tree canopies of the river-line Mabira forest over one of the tributaries of the Nile just 10km outside Lugazi town, through the winding roads of Lugazi Sugar Plantations. You will have an opportunity to shoot the arrows as you see it in the movies. And if you think shooting arrow is as easy as the movies make it seem, you will be surprised. You may just drop the arrow at your feet. This comes with free photography by John, a committed Kenyan born photographer.

Where to stay and food:

Jinja is not cheap. A decent bed and breakfast room will not be less than Ush.80,000/-. And that is if you booked earlier. If you are the type who will look for where to stay on arrival, you will find all decent spaces taken. Jinja has some luxurious offerings too that charge in dollars; ranging from US$50 to US$120 bed and breakfast for double occupancy. These may include the former Gately Inn which I think now trades as Nile Cottages, Surjios Guest House, Source of the Nile Resort Hotel, Nile Resort Hotel, Kingfisher, Paradise Hotel, Sunset Hotel, Nile Anchor, Nile Cottages and so many others.

There are several lodging facilities to choose from along the Nile on Njeru – Kayunga road just in case Jinja town is not giving you a good bargain. And as earlier noted, should you find it hard, you can drive out of the town on Iganga road and stay in Bugembe or along Kamuli road or return to the Buganda side and stay in Njeru division.

Jinja is an Indian stone city with several India-fashioned duukas and buildings. Most of the roads are named after former Indian residents and European occupiers. There are a few roads named after indigenous Basoga. But whatever it is, it has so many Indian restaurants to choose from. This city named after a big stone that stood out where the current Owen Falls Dam is and from which, the flooded falls of Kiyiira that lie between the old bridge and the train bridge, give the original name of the Nile; Kiyiira. Jinja is an Indian city in terms of food offering and buildings.

Most high-end restaurants are run by Ugandans of Indian descent and so, while in Jinja, you will have a taste of India! There are a few café houses that serve fast foods while back-end restaurants serve local dishes. Some lodges/hotels on workshop or retreat days, serve Uganda buffets.
