Exploring the Source of the Nile in Uganda with the Exeter Students

We had an unforgettable trip to the source of the River Nile in Jinja with our visiting team of students from Exeter, UK.

In line with our commitment to authentic and responsible tourism, we chose to use local canoes made and operated by the fishermen themselves. This way, the money we spent directly supports the local community rather than large corporations — empowering the fishermen and sustaining their livelihoods.

The canoe ride was not just a means of transport; it was a true adventure! Our guests enjoyed breathtaking views of wildlife and diverse bird species along the lush banks of the Nile and Lake Victoria. The highlight was reaching the exact point where the Nile bubbles out of Lake Victoria, beginning its epic journey all the way to the Mediterranean Sea through Sudan and Egypt.

It was another thrilling, hands-on experience for our guests and a powerful example of how we champion authentic, experiential, and community-focused tourism in Uganda.

Another exciting highlight for our visiting team from Exeter, UK, was the immersive coffee experience at stone house! The team got to discover the full journey of coffee — from the plant to the steaming cup.

They took part in every step: pounding to separate beans from the shells, watching the village women expertly roast them, then pounding again to make the powder, sieving it, and finally brewing and enjoying authentic, freshly made coffee.

This wonderful session was led by the talented ladies from Busu village, who shared their incredible skills and warm hospitality. It was not only a cultural exchange but also a way for the local women to earn income, showing how tourism can truly benefit both guests and host communities.

This is the true spirit of responsible tourism — creating memorable experiences while empowering local people.

Then came the thrilling Busu Bicycle Race, an unforgettable event that brought the whole village together!

Participants included riders from all five zones of Busu village, along with 15 enthusiastic guests from Exeter in the UK. In total, 32 riders took to the roads, cheered on by hundreds of excited spectators who lined the routes with music, dancing, and unstoppable energy.

The race was won by Tom, a promising young talent who, with the right support, has the potential to go very far.

This event was a beautiful demonstration of how tourism, when done responsibly, can be inclusive and impactful — creating joy, building connections, and benefiting everyone in the community.

Other highlights of the trip to Busu village for the group from Exeter included rich community engagement and unforgettable cultural experiences.

The group had the chance to immerse themselves in hands-on activities, such as creating beautiful jewellery from recycled paper beads — a craft deeply rooted in local tradition. They also took part in a traditional cooking session, preparing meals over firewood under the guidance of village elders, learning firsthand the art of Ugandan cuisine.

In the evenings, they enjoyed authentic cultural celebrations, with lively music, dance, and delicious traditional dishes prepared by the Busu community. These experiences offered the group a deeper connection to the heart of the village and created lasting memories of warmth, joy, and shared humanity.

Incredible Impact in Busu Village!

The team has truly gone above and beyond during their time in Busu village, Iganga. Their hard work and generosity have touched many lives and created lasting change.

✅ Renovated the administration block at Busu Primary School, giving staff and students a better learning environment.
✅ Installed a water pump at Stonehouse Farm, which will also benefit the entire Kyanjade community by providing easier access to clean water.
✅ Built a new home for a widow and her four children, offering them a safe and dignified place to live.
✅ Donated a wealth of resources to the school and community, supporting education and daily life.

Through these projects, the team has not only improved facilities but also inspired hope and strengthened the community. Their impact will be felt for years to come.
