The first sound wasn’t loud.
It was deep… like thunder trapped inside the forest.
We had been hiking for hours through the misty mountains of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. The air smelled of wet earth and wild leaves. Every step was careful, quiet, respectful.
Then suddenly, the silverback froze.
The entire gorilla family became still.
And from behind a wall of vines, a young mountain gorilla stepped forward.
Not fully grown.
Not yet powerful.
Not yet the leader.
But in his eyes… you could see ambition burning.
He stood upright, puffed his chest, and began to beat it with both hands.
BOOM.
BOOM.
BOOM.
The sound echoed through the jungle like a drum announcing his arrival to the world.
At first, some tourists smiled nervously. They thought it was aggression.
But as a safari guide, I understood something deeper.
Young mountain gorillas chest beat for many reasons.
Sometimes it’s play.
Sometimes confidence.
Sometimes communication.
And sometimes… it’s a young soul trying to discover who he is.
This young gorilla was challenging the silence itself.
He charged forward a few steps, snapping branches dramatically, trying to look bigger than he really was. The silverback watched calmly, unmoved, experienced.
The young gorilla stopped.
For a moment, the forest held its breath.
Would the silverback attack him?
Would the troop reject him?
Instead… the old silverback slowly turned away.
No violence.
No humiliation.
Just quiet acceptance.
The young gorilla lowered his arms and sat down beside the family.
And that was the moment I understood something powerful about mountain gorillas:
Even in the wild, growth is messy.
Young gorillas chest beat before they are strong enough.
They posture before they are ready.
They test themselves before they understand themselves.
Because courage is not born from certainty.
It is born from trying.
In Uganda’s forests, chest beating is more than noise.
It is identity forming.
Confidence being practiced.
A young life rehearsing for the future.
And honestly… humans are not so different.
Many of us are still beating our chests in our own ways: Trying to prove ourselves.
Trying to be seen.
Trying to believe we belong.
Some people will laugh.
Some will misunderstand your journey.
But every strong leader was once inexperienced, uncertain, and afraid.
That young gorilla reminded me of something I’ll never forget:
You do not become powerful overnight.
You become powerful by showing up before you feel ready.
🌿 Lesson from the mountain gorillas of Uganda:
Confidence is practiced, not inherited.
Growth often looks awkward before it becomes greatness.
True strength does not always respond with force.
And sometimes the loudest chest beating hides the deepest desire to belong.
