The virunga National Park is notable for its chain of active volcanoes and the greatest diversity of habitats of any park in Africa: from steppes, savannas and lava plains, swamps, lowland and Afromontane forests, to the unique Afroalpine vegetation and icefields of the Ruwenzori mountains, which culminate in peaks above 5000m. The site includes the spectacular Ruwenzori and Virunga Massifs, including Africa's two most active volcanoes. The great diversity of habitats harbors an exceptional biodiversity, including endemic as well as rare and globally endangered species, such as the mountain gorillas.
The Kahuzi-Byega national park, this park is situated in the Eastern part of the DR of Congo, 50 km west of the town of Bukavu, near Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border. It consists of a smaller sector on the eastern side covering part of the Mitumba Mountains, and a larger western sector in the Congolese central basin. The two zones are connected by a narrow corridor. The entrance to the park is at Tshivanga, on the eastern side.
Finally the famous Garamba, which is situated in the district of Haut-Uélé in the north eastern corner of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, adjacent to the Sudanese border. Garamba adjoins Sudan's Lantoto National Park and is surrounded in the south, east and west by the Gangala-naBodio, Mondo Missa and Azande domains de chasse or hunting areas. The park's northern border is the watershed of the Nile and Congo Rivers. The total area of the Garamba complex is 12,427km2.
