Yes. Common (river) hippos are semi‑aquatic and often give birth in shallow water. Calves can be born underwater and are able to surface and breathe within seconds; mothers help guide them to the surface. Pygmy hippos, by contrast, usually give birth on land. The shallow‑water births help protect calves from land predators and support the heavy mother.
