After the gorilla trek in Bwindi, the afternoon belongs to the Batwa. 🌿

On trek day, guides and trackers lead you through rough, muddy rain forest for anywhere from 1 to 6 hours. Then it's back to the lodge at Buhoma.

That afternoon, your lodge arranges a visit to a Batwa community. You arrive as a guest, with the forest mud still on your boots. 🦍

Trek the gorillas in the forest.

Pick up your binoculars and a bird book. Uganda has local, endemic and migratory species waiting to be found. 🐦

Thirteen days, and the birds lead the trip. The route runs through a diversity of habitats and the major birding spots, chosen for a clear view.

Many travellers who have booked it name the sheer variety of birds as the highlight.

Kigali Airport to Lake Mutanda in Uganda: one 4 to 5 hour drive and one border post. 🇷🇼🇺🇬

Your guide meets you at Kigali arrivals, holding a Gorilla Explorers sign.
The road runs north through Ruhengeri and crosses into Uganda at the Cyanika border post. You reach Kisoro by early afternoon.

Next morning, golden monkeys in the Mgahinga forest.
Then Bwindi, and one hour with a mountain gorilla family. 🦍
After that: the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, a Kazinga Channel boat cruise, chimpanzees in Kalinzu and Lake Bunyonyi, before the drive back to Kigali.

Private 4x4 with a pop-up roof, guide, lodges and meals are handled. Visas and international flights stay with you.

One morning you're hauling yourself up a muddy slope in Bwindi. The next day, a lioness is yawning in the grass. 🦁

That contrast is the trip. Six days, two habitats.

Bwindi first: two to eight hours of steep, muddy tracking through the Impenetrable Forest — a UNESCO World Heritage site — to sit with a mountain gorilla family. Then Queen Elizabeth National Park. Chimpanzee trekking in the Kyambura Gorge. A boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, where you may see hippos, buffalo and crocodiles. 🌿

The gorilla trek gets an hour. Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth get six days. 🦍

One hour face to face with a mountain gorilla family, deep in Bwindi's Impenetrable Forest. The other five and a half days: lions dozing in golden grass, a leopard gone before the shutter catches up, waterbuck grazing the plains in between treks — all on the same trip.

A silverback in the Bwindi forest, then the Source of the Nile at Jinja. 🦍

One route holds both ends of Uganda: the rainforest where the mountain gorillas live, and the open savanna with lions, elephants, buffalo and hippos. Kibale's chimpanzees sit in the middle, with up to 13 primate species along the way.

Murchison Falls. Queen Elizabeth. Lake Mburo. Lake Bunyonyi. Ten days, and the permits, transport and lodges are ours to sort.

One look, and the whole forest goes quiet. 🦍

Nine days. Two countries. One route through Uganda and Rwanda.

Mountain gorillas on the trek everyone comes for. Golden monkeys in the bamboo. Diverse wildlife in between.

You climb through the last of the forest, and then the Virunga peaks are level with your eyes.

Mount Muhabura is one of the Virunga volcanoes, rising straight out of Kisoro. The walk up takes two days — moss-hung forest first, then the open ground where giant lobelias stand in the mist, then the ridge, with the whole chain laid out in front of you. 🌋

Kisoro is where our gorilla treks already start, so this is two days you can add without moving base.

A chimpanzee in the Kibale canopy, a stripped branch still in his hand. 🌿

He's one stop of eleven days. The same trip takes in Bwindi for the mountain gorillas, game drives across Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth, and a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel.

Eleven days is what it takes to link all of it without rushing.
