That stare means something in Tarangire National Park!

A lion’s eyes don’t wander without reason. Once locked onto potential prey, every detail matters, distance, wind direction, movement, and timing. Lions can spend long minutes perfectly still before making a move, conserving energy for the short explosive chase that follows.

The Kirk's dik-dik is one of the smallest antelopes you will spot in Tarangire National Park usually hiding quietly among the acacia bushes.

One fascinating feature is the dark “hole” near its nose. This is actually a scent gland called the preorbital gland, which dik-diks use to mark their territory by rubbing secretions onto grass and branches. Nature’s tiny perfumer 🌿

Despite their delicate size, dik-diks are fast, territorial, and usually live in loyal pairs for life. Their name even comes from the sharp alarm call they make when frightened: “dik-dik!”
