Kitagwenda Mpanga Gorge
It's a hidden gem in Kitagwenda District, Western Uganda, about 30km off the Fort Portal–Kasese road and right next to Queen Elizabeth National Park. From Kampala it’s roughly 350km, so expect 6–7 hours by road via Mbarara or 7–8 hours via Fort Portal. The gorge slices through lush rainforest along the Mpanga River, with dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, natural swimming pools, and trails that lead to viewpoints of the Rwenzori foothills. You’ll spot colobus monkeys, rare birds, and butterflies with almost no crowds.

The best time to visit is *June–August and December–February* during the dry season, when trails are firm and views are clear. The rainy months of *March–May and Sept–Nov* are greener with stronger waterfalls and great birding, but paths get muddy.

Visit because it gives you raw, uncrowded nature, adventure, and calm all in one. It’s the perfect quiet detour to feel Uganda’s wild west without the tour bus rush.

*Kidepo Valley National Park* is Uganda’s most remote and wildest safari park, tucked into the far northeast Karamoja region near South Sudan and Kenya. It spans 1,442km² of semi-arid savanna, acacia woodland, and rugged mountains with two main valleys: the wetter Narus and the drier Kidepo. Home to 77-80+ mammals and 475-500 birds, it’s the only Ugandan park where you can see cheetah, African wild dog, ostrich, and the endemic Karamoja apalis, plus all Big Five after rhino were reintroduced in 2026. Known for its “true wilderness” feel, few crowds, and stunning landscapes like Kanangorok Hot Springs and Mt Morungole, it’s best visited in the dry season from September to March. It’s about a 10-hour drive from Kampala or a short flight, managed by UWA since 1962, and offers a rare mix of rare wildlife, silence, and Ik cultural experiences nearby.
