Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine – the sacred starting point of the Uganda Martyrs’ story.
Nestled on the peaceful shores of Lake Victoria, this beautiful Minor Basilica marks the exact spot of Kabaka Mwanga II’s palace in 1886. It was here that St. Charles Lwanga secretly baptized young catechumens in the dead of night, and where the first martyrs – St. Andrew Kaggwa and St. Denis Ssebugwawo – courageously laid down their lives rather than renounce their faith.
From these grounds, the remaining martyrs began their historic walk to Namugongo, a path of unwavering conviction that would forever change Uganda and Africa.
Today, Munyonyo invites quiet reflection amid stunning architecture, serene gardens, and powerful statues – a place where history, spirituality, and natural beauty meet.
