Your Cows Produce More Than Milk: Turning Manure into Farm Value

A dairy farmer may look at manure and see a cleaning problem. But what if it is actually the beginning of another harvest? Every cow produces manure every day. On a well-managed farm, that manure can support crops, reduce fertiliser costs, improve soils, produce biogas and, in some cases, become an additional product for sale. The first step is to stop treating manure as waste.
1. Return nutrients to the farm
Well-managed manure can be composted and applied to pasture, maize, bananas, coffee, vegetables and other crops. Instead of continuously buying nutrients from outside the farm, part of what leaves the soil through production can be returned to it.
This is where dairy begins to support the wider farm.
2. Connect enterprises instead of managing them separately
A maize garden can produce grain, silage and crop residues. The cow converts feed into milk and manure. The manure returns to the maize garden or another crop.
Suddenly, one enterprise is strengthening another.
A productive farm is not always a collection of separate businesses. Sometimes its strength lies in the connections between them.
3. Manure can become a product
Where there is demand, properly composted and packaged manure may be sold to crop farmers, gardeners, nurseries and other users.
But farmers should first ask an important question:
Is the manure worth more on my own land or in somebody else’s garden?
