How Many Cows Can One Acre Feed?

This is one of the most common questions dairy farmers ask:
“If I have one acre, how many cows can I keep?”
The honest answer is: it depends.

One acre can feed many cows badly, or a few cows very well. The goal is not to keep the highest number of cows. The goal is to keep the number of cows that can produce milk profitably.

The Best Forage Crops for Dairy Farmers in Uganda
A dairy cow does not only need “something green” to eat.

She needs the right forage, the kind that fills the stomach, supports digestion, improves milk production, and keeps her productive even when the dry season comes.

For many dairy farmers in Uganda, the difference between struggling and growing is not always the breed of cow. Sometimes, it is the forage crop growing behind the cowshed.

How to Reduce Feed Wastage on Your Dairy Farm
Feed wastage is one of the quietest ways dairy farmers lose money.
You may not notice it immediately because the cows are still eating. But every heap of wasted hay, every spoiled silage portion, every concentrate poured carelessly, and every rejected feed in the trough is money leaving the farm.
In dairy farming, reducing wastage is not just about being careful. It is about improving profit.

The Economics of Feeding: How Good Nutrition Increases Farm Profit
Some farmers look at feed as a cost. Smart dairy farmers look at feed as an investment.
Why? Because in dairy farming, milk does not come from the cow alone. Milk comes from the feed the cow eats, digests, and converts into production.
If the feeding is poor, the business suffers. If feeding improves, profit often improves too.

Why Consistent Feeding Time Improves Milk Yield

A dairy cow may not wear a watch, but her body follows a clock. She knows when feeding usually comes. She knows when milking happens. She knows when to rest. When this daily rhythm is disturbed, milk production can quietly suffer.
That is why consistent feeding time is one of the simplest management practices that can improve milk yield without buying new cows.

Signs of Poor Quality Silage, And How to Avoid It

Before a cow eats silage, she already knows something you might not. She walks to the feed… pauses… smells it… and sometimes walks away.
That hesitation is a warning. Good silage attracts cows. Poor silage repels them. If cows are not eating well, milk will not come, no matter how much you feed.

How to Store Hay Properly to Maintain Its Nutritional Value.

Let’s begin with a quiet loss most farmers never measure. You cut good grass. You dry it well. You store it… Three months later, your cows eat it, but milk doesn’t improve.
What happened? The hay lost its quality during storage.

5 Ways Smart Dairy Farmers Prepare Feed for the Dry Season

Walk through two farms at the peak of the dry season.
On one, the farmer is buying small amounts of expensive feed every day.
On the other, the farmer is calm, cows are feeding, milk is steady.
Same weather. Different preparation.
So what do the second group do differently?
