The north eastern region of Uganda known as Karamoja, has been a destination for only the most adventurous travellers. Until now…
Only recently, Karamoja has been able to reveal its secrets. From colonial times up to only five years ago, Karamoja has been isolated. Under colonial rule, the region was a closed district and mobility restricted making it only accessible with a permit. During Amin’s reign the Karimojong people were suppressed and humiliated. In the eighties the Karimojong obtained guns that caused a tribal war for thirty years.
Revealing Karamoja’s secrets
Karamoja is Uganda’s best kept secret because its secrets are intangible like the preserved cultural heritage with unique dressing, craftsmanship as iron melting, genius governing system, food preservation methods, pastoral culture and ancestral knowledge of herbal medicines and cultural ceremonies. On the other hand, Karamoja also has tangible secrets as wildlife and bird species that are endemic to Karamoja, lush mountain ranges, over 50 minerals and precious stones (gold, silver, copper, iron, titanium, manganese, cobalt, niobium, tantalite, chrome) and oil.
Kara-Tunga is a small scale locally-owned tour operator aimed at positively impacting the image of the region, strengthening community resilience and preserving cultural heritage through tourism and arts.
Our team of knowledgable local guides, are eager to sharing East Africa’s last indigenous living cultures and natural resources from Karamoja’s savanna grasslands to the lush volcanic mountain ranges.
Local aware
We are true citizens of our area as we’re are locally owned and hire local talent. We aim at investing in local growth, the well-being of our people and the health of the local economy. Citizenship begins at home.
Participation
Our strength is on sharing and full participation. We stand for a meaningful experience by spending time with the community. Discover the countryside during nature walks or mountain hiking. Share daily life with the community by spending a day or night in a traditional homestead.
Tourism Development
For long, tourism in Uganda has been focused on wildlife safaris and other tourist destinations but community tourism is an opportunity for the local community to participate and benefit from their natural and cultural resources.
Tourism development is therefore at the core of our operations. We focus on rural areas affected most by decline in the capacity of agriculture. Degeneration of the countryside is prevented and cultural heritage preserved by raising supplementary family income through tourism.
We focus on identifying potential tourism sites and activities, building community capacity through education and creating demand through marketing and packaging.
Opportunity fund
Kara-Tunga Opportunity Fund is founded by one of Karamoja’s biggest fans, well-wisher Pat Montani. Through this fund, we aim at extending access to capital for tourism-related micro entrepreneurs in Karamoja. We celebrate and support people looking to create a better future for themselves, their families and their communities. Our focus areas are beekeeping and arts & crafts.
The Kara-Tunga opportunity fund enables micro-entrepreneurs to lend money for equipment and tools to kickstart or boost their business in collaboration with Kara-Tunga. The loan is given against 0% Interest and through the collaboration, Kara-Tunga grants them access to an international market.
Safety and recognition
As a responsible tour operator, we are insured with an internationally respected Insurance Broker. Our guides are certified Uganda Red Cross Society volunteers and capable to provide First aid. We are also a member of the respected Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO) and registered with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB).
