Yipy! Giraffe's have returned to Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve after an absence of almost half a century!

The first group of 5 'Critically Endangered' Nubian giraffe were released safe and sound.

U.S. Mission employee Peter Kennett recently visited Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, located in eastern Uganda southwest of Moroto, and spotted this beautiful Roan antelope!

In his own words, “The Roan antelope is a shy, but powerfully built animal with long, sturdy limbs and a thick neck that looks thicker because of an upstanding mane and a beard. The head is long and narrow with a wide gape, framed by long, tasseled ears. Named for its color, the roan is reddish gray to reddish brown, with a striking black-and-white facial mask. The sexes look much alike, but males are heavier and have thicker, sickle-shaped horns. Roan have been known to kill lions that fail to overpower them immediately. Their piercing horns and a sideways stabbing technique, together with an aggressive temperament, make the roan antelope unusually formidable.”

Uganda Wildlife Authority is currently translocating Impala from ranches around Lake Mburo to Pian Upe wildlife reserve. As of today already 91 Impala have been taken and released in Pian Upe.

This is the second phase of Impala translocation to the reserve; the first phase having been done in March, 2018 when 92 Impala were captured and released into Pian. Members of the press last night joined the translocation team to witness the capture, loading and release. They braved the night long evening drive through the night to Pian. The very muddy and slippery roads have however left some portions impossible to access.
