Eshabwe – The Pride of Ankole Cuisine 🥣

Eshabwe is a rich ghee-based sauce from Ankole, traditionally prepared for special ceremonies. In the past, it was carefully made by elderly women in silence, as it was believed that talking could spoil its quality.

During traditional marriage ceremonies, only four people tasted it first: the groom and his father, and the bride’s paternal aunt (Ishenkazi) and maternal uncle (Nyinarimi). It was served in a special clay bowl called orwabya.
Today, Eshabwe is enjoyed by everyone, often served with karo (millet bread), matooke, potatoes, beans, and other local foods — a true taste of Ankole heritage. 🐄✨

The Pride of the Plains: Uganda’s Long-Horned Cattle

In the rolling hills of western Uganda, where the golden sun meets the green pastures, a majestic creature roams — the Ankole long-horned cattle. With their sweeping horns that can stretch over two meters wide, these cattle are more than livestock; they are a symbol of pride, culture, and resilience.
For centuries, the Ankole people have raised these cattle, not just for milk or meat, but as a measure of wealth, beauty, and heritage. A man’s worth was once known by the size of his herd, and the cattle were celebrated in songs, dances, and proverbs. Their milk, rich and creamy, was shared in traditional ceremonies, and their hides used to make drums that echoed through the valleys.
Despite the modern world changing fast, the Ankole cattle remain a living treasure of Uganda. Their endurance in harsh climates and their gentle nature reflect the strength of the people who keep them. Today, farmers and conservationists are working together to preserve this unique breed — ensuring that the sight of the long horns glistening in the evening sun will continue to grace the Ugandan landscape for generations to come.
In every horn, there is a story.
In every herd, a heartbeat of tradition.
