Life is a highway when you’re rolling down Main Street 🏁🏎️

The Second Annual Abingdon Soap Box Derby is happening this Saturday, September 5th, from 10 AM-3 PM. We’re bringing gravity-powered racing and old-fashioned small-town fun to historic downtown .

Here’s what’s in store for Saturday:
🏁 9 AM | Main Street closes from Cummings to Pecan
🔧 9 AM | Racer check-in & car inspection
🏎️ 10 AM | Trial runs & racing begins
🎶1:00 PM | Music on The Martha lawn ft. Philip Bowen
🎉 2:30 PM | Awards ceremony

Be sure to visit the official Fan Zone behind the finish line, where you’ll find food trucks and family-friendly activities.

Event partners Feeding Southwest Virginia will be on-site with a 45th anniversary food drive. Attendees are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items and support their important mission.

Interested in building a car? Its not too late! Our team will accept walk-up registrations at the race. Get your pit crew together and start working on those last minute blueprints!

Meet us on Main Street this First Friday 🎨

First Friday is happening this Friday, September 4th in downtown from 5 to 8 PM.

Wander through galleries and studios at your own pace and meet the artists that keep Abingdon vibrant. Keep the night going and catch a live performance, shop downtown, or grab a drink at a participating DORA beverage vendor to sip and stroll your way through the historic district.

Here’s what’s happening this month:

✨ Create your own animal buttons, snacks, and open studios at the Art Lab at William King Museum of Art
✨ Live artisan & stained-glass demonstrations at The Glass Peacock

September is also the LAST First Friday of the year with free retro trolley rides from Experience Appalachia. Hop on and off at stops throughout downtown to make your art walk even easier.

Now open at William King Museum of Art 🦠

Jocelyn Mathewes: Para(site)dise explores illness and corporeality through photography, cyanotype prints, assemblage, paper sculpture and video.

Mathewes’ work asks difficult questions about how we live with illness: In what ways are we allowed to be sick and in what ways are we expected to be strong? How do we navigate illness in a world which is not made to accommodate disabilities or, indeed, times of weakness?

On display through January 10, 2027, plan an afternoon at the museum and spend some time with this contemplative new exhibition.

The weather had other plans, but the show goes on! Tonight’s Thursday Night Jams show with Cinémathèque has been moved indoors to Delta Blues BBQ at the Abingdon Commons! Bring your friends and come dance with us!

Doors at 7 PM, show starts at 7:30 PM. Free and open to all ages!
