Did you know that Copper Canyon Casita sits along The Old Spanish Trail and Abiquiú was a prominent jumping off point?
In recent geologic history, the Chama River cut a canyon through the large cliff fault at the edge of the Colorado Plateau and provided a never-ending supply of water to animals and people. It was a natural access point back and forth from the high country of the plateau to the Rio Grande River and was used as a gateway to the land north and west, including Chaco Canyon and the Hopi Mesas. This eventual path, now known as The Old Spanish Trail, was first explored in 1776 by the Dominguez-Escalante Expedition, looking for a way from Santa Fe to Monterey, CA. The Domínguez–Escalante expedition was a Spanish journey of exploration conducted by two Franciscan priests, Atanasio Domínguez and Silvestre Vélez de Escalante, to find an overland route from Santa Fe, NM, to their Roman Catholic mission in Monterey, CA. The expedition left for the wilderness after departing the Pueblo of Abiquiú, heading west through the Chama River Canyon. This ‘jumping off point’ was later used for trade in the 1830’s by mule, foot, and horses, terminating at Olivera Street in Los Angeles, CA.
FUN FACT: Abiquiú-born Julián Antonio Chávez is the namesake of Chavez Ravine, next to what is now Dodger’s Stadium. He immigrated from Abiquiú to Los Angeles on the OST where he settled land in the ravine and became a Los Angeles public official in the 19th century.
