Picture this: you’re sipping a glass of Burgundy on deck while vineyards roll past, you’ve just made three new friends at lunch, and tomorrow you’ll be standing inside a 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater. Nobody is asking you to pay double for traveling alone, and nobody is hogging the blankets.

We’ll spend 7 glorious nights on a 5-star river ship, gliding down the Saône and Rhône rivers. Roman emperors, medieval popes, and Van Gogh all fell in love with this part of France, and you’re about to see why. We’ll have w**e tastings, lavender fields, jaw-dropping gorges, a palace fit for a pope, and plenty of time to linger at a café pretending we live here.

Your Week in France
Day 1 · Bonjour, Lyon!
Step aboard our five-star home in Lyon, meet your fellow solo adventurers, and let the vacation officially begin.
Day 2 · Lyon, Foodie Capital of the World (Just Ask the Locals)
After breakfast, a local guide shows us around Lyon. The Romans founded it in 43 BC, and Emperor Claudius was born here. The city later got rich on silk, and you can still see that wealth in its Renaissance buildings and grand churches. We’ll explore the UNESCO-listed Old Town and duck through the traboules, the secret covered passageways silk merchants used to keep their goods dry. Lyon has around 20 Michelin-starred restaurants, so yes, you’re allowed to snack.
After lunch we cast off and head north on the Saône. We’ll pass the famous Beaujolais villages, and on a clear day you might even spot snow-capped Mont Blanc. As evening falls, we’ll toast with a crisp glass of Mâcon white before dinner.
Day 3 · Beaune, Burgundy’s W**e Capital
We wake up in Chalon, birthplace of the man who invented photography (so snap away!). Then we ride through storybook w**e villages like Meursault, Pommard, and Gevrey-Chambertin on our way to medieval Beaune. Its star attraction is the Hôtel-Dieu, a 15th-century hospital with a dazzling rooftop of colorful geometric tiles. After our guided tour, you’re free to wander, and I highly recommend a cellar tasting. When in Burgundy! In the afternoon we relax on board as we sail back toward Lyon and onto the Rhône.
Day 4 · Vienne & Tain l’Hermitage: Romans and Reds
Explore Vienne at your own pace. Highlights include the stunning Roman Temple of Augustus and Livia and a hilltop amphitheater that once held 13,500 spectators. Climb Mont Pipet for a photo-worthy view of the river.
After lunch we sail through one of the prettiest stretches of the Rhône, with wooded cliffs rising on both sides. On the way, we’ll test our taste buds with a blind tasting of five w**es, and we’ll even try a re-created Roman w**e. That evening we dock in Tain l’Hermitage, home of world-famous Syrah. After dinner, take a moonlit stroll across France’s oldest suspension bridge to charming Tournon.
Day 5 · The Ardèche Gorges: Nature Shows Off
Lazy morning alert! Grab a book and a sunny spot on deck while the scenery turns into the south of France, with terracotta roofs, warm colors, and the scent of pine in the air.
After lunch we head to the Ardèche Gorges, where limestone cliffs plunge almost 1,000 feet to the river below and a giant natural stone arch, the Pont d’Arc, steals the show. You get to choose your adventure:
Lavender lover? Visit a lavender farm and museum, learn how essential oils are made, and shop the boutique. It’s relaxed and smells amazing.
Feeling adventurous? Head down into the Grotte de la Madeleine, a prehistoric cave with art about 17,000 years old. Fair warning: it’s 250 steps down and 250 back up!
After dinner we’ll have a ballroom dancing show, and then it’s your turn on the floor to learn a French madison line dance. Two left feet are welcome!
Day 6 · Arles & the Pont du Gard: Gladiators, Van Gogh, and a Wonder of the World
Good morning, Provence! In sunny Arles, pick your tour:
History buff? See one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world, an ancient theater, and the atmospheric Alyscamps necropolis.
Art lover? Follow in Van Gogh’s footsteps. He lived here from February 1888 and painted around 300 works in just over a year, including Sunflowers and The Night Café.
After lunch, prepare to be wowed by the Pont du Gard. This 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct is over 900 feet long and almost 160 feet high, and it was built without a drop of mortar. Back on board, we’ll pass the 15th-century castle at Tarascon during dinner.
Day 7 · Avignon, Where the Popes Partied
In the 14th century the popes moved to Avignon, and the city has been showing off ever since. Choose between:
A guided tour of the famous half-a-bridge, the Pont Saint-Bénézet, plus an inside tour of the Popes’ Palace, the largest Gothic palace in the world (expect lots of steps!)
A visit to the bridge followed by a charming petit train ride around town
Your afternoon is free. You might shop, visit the Petit Palais to see works by Botticelli, or find a shady café and people-watch like a true Provençal. That evening we celebrate with the Chef’s Dinner, featuring signature dishes, and then a local pianist plays French songs to send us off in style.
Day 8 · Au Revoir (For Now!)
We’ll say goodbye to our wonderful crew and head home with full hearts, a full camera roll, and a group of new friends to plan the next trip with.
