There's cold ... and then there's Montréal-in-December-waiting-75-minutes-on-a-sidewalk cold. At a brisk 18°, we stood outside Christmas Town at La Taverne de Noël doing that little bounce-in-place dance that says, "I can totally still feel my toes," while quietly questioning all of our life choices.

Polo, picnics, muddy shoes, and grandbabies between chukkers đŸŽđŸ·

Tailgating at the Roseland Polo Match at King Family Vineyards reminded us that the best moments in wine country aren't always in the glass - they're on the field, chasing dogs, stomping divots, and watching little eyes take it all in.

Life's not still - and neither are we.

Tailgating ... but make it polo đŸ·đŸŽ

Rosé on the table, grandbabies on the blanket, and wide Blue Ridge skies overhead at the Roseland Polo Match at King Family Vineyards. This is Virginia Wine Country done the Life in Motion way - family first, wine second, memories forever.

Life's not still - and neither are we.

Mountain views. Birthday banners. Grandkids being delightfully unhinged đŸŽ‚đŸ”ïž

This chapter of our Virginia Wine Country trip wasn't about the wine - it was about the people. Family under one roof in the Blue Ridge Mountains, celebrating another year and soaking in the moments that matter most.

Life's not still - and neither are we.

Virginia Wine Country, but make it family 🌳 Adirondack chairs. A creek-side hammock. Grandbabies everywhere.

This trip wasn't about checking boxes - it was about sitting still long enough to feel how good life gets when everyone's together.

Our annual Christmas date 🎄

A little shopping on Colley Avenue.
Cocktails and dinner at Green Onion.
"It's a Wonderful Life" at the Historic Naro Cinema (since 1936).

Not big. Not flashy. Just ours. Because the best traditions don't stand still - and neither do we.

Sometimes the universe pulls up a chair and pours you a glass đŸ·

Meeting the Gabriele Rausse at his Charlottesville winery wasn't on the itinerary - but it became one of those unforgettable moments. Stories. Laughter. Wine. Family. And a living legend sharing his life's work with us.

This is why we travel.
This is Life in Motion.

The road trip chapter begins đŸš—đŸ·

Virginia Wine Country, grandbabies in hammocks, cold creek water, lawn chairs under trees, and a dog who clearly understood the assignment. This week isn't about rushing - it's about arriving. Together.

Life's not still - and neither are we.

MontrĂ©al in December is pure magic — snow-dusted streets, glowing Christmas villages, cozy cafĂ©s, incredible French food, and more holiday spirit than any one city should reasonably be allowed to have.

For Nicole’s birthday (and our anniversary!), we explored MontrĂ©al’s iconic Christmas scenes — from festive taverns and European-style cafĂ©s to Old MontrĂ©al’s historic charm and the twinkling Grand MarchĂ© de NoĂ«l. We sipped warm cider, braved winter lines, savored French breakfasts, rolled maple syrup in the snow, rode the holiday energy of the city, and wrapped it all in freshly fallen snow.

Life’s not still — and neither are we. Join us for a warm, whimsical, wintery journey through this beautiful city.

Frozen Maple Magic at MontrĂ©al’s Grand MarchĂ© de NoĂ«l

There are childhood joys
and then there’s frozen maple syrup rolled onto a stick in the middle of a MontrĂ©al winter wonderland. At the Grand MarchĂ© de NoĂ«l, the air smells like cinnamon, roasted nuts, and pure QuĂ©bĂ©cois holiday spirit – but nothing stops you in your snowy tracks quite like that golden ribbon of syrup poured onto fresh snow, cooled in seconds, and twirled into a sticky, shimmering treat. It’s rustic, it’s theatrical, it’s basically dessert performance art.

And the taste? OMG. Freakin’ yum. It’s rich, warm, cold, sweet, and wildly nostalgic all at once – like winter handing you a hug and a sugar rush. Moments like these are why we keep this Life in Motion: chasing flavors that wake us up, places that charm us senseless, and tiny delights that turn a simple stroll through a Christmas festival into a memory worth savoring. MontrĂ©al, you sweet, frozen genius.

Roasting Chestnuts at the Grand Marché de Noël de Montréal. (A.K.A. The Accidental Soundtrack of Christmas Chaos)

There we were - strolling through the Grand MarchĂ© de NoĂ«l de MontrĂ©al, soaking in the warm glow of string lights and the sweet perfume of holiday treats - when a plume of fragrant, smoky air drifted across the walkway. Chestnuts! Actual roasting chestnuts. Like the song. Like the postcard. Like the Christmas fantasy your inner eight-year-old still believes in. Naturally, I hit record. What I didn't notice until later đŸ€Ł the completely unhinged music playing behind the booth. Only at a Montreal Christmas festival can you capture a scene straight out of Dickens ... scored like a fever dream. Merry Christmas to us all 🎄

Absurd soundtrack aside, the moment was pure holiday magic. There's something about roasting chestnuts that feels timeless - like the city itself slows down just long enough for you to savor a small, warm, delicious moment. And that's what this season is all about, isn't it? Gathering close, laughing harder than you planned, indulging in good food, good company, and the little surprises that make travel unforgettable. Life's not still - and neither, apparently, is the playlist at a Quebec Christmas market.

A Visit to Basilique Notre-Dame MontrĂ©al Beneath Winter's Breath â›Ș

There's a particular kind of cold in Old MontrĂ©al - the kind that nips at your cheeks, seeps into your gloves, and whispers, "Turn back now." But we don't do "turning back" here at Life in Motion. So, we leaned into the swirling snow and braved the icy winds to bring you a glimpse of Basilique Notre-Dame MontrĂ©al in all its winter glory. Standing proudly beside the historic Saint-Sulpice Seminary and gazing out over Place d’Armes, the basilica rises like a gothic dream against the storm, a beacon for anyone who loves beauty enough to chase it through the cold.

Step inside and the world shifts. The hush of centuries settles over you, and suddenly the snowy chaos outside fades into something poetic. This is why we wander, why we follow cobblestone streets through biting weather: to find places that remind us that life is richer when we keep moving, keep exploring, keep feeling something. Consider this your front-row seat to a Montréal icon, no frostbite required. Life's not still - and neither were we.
