Touring Redcliffe Plantation and Banksia provided special sights. At Redcliffe, a six-year old who absolutely loves history and was enthusiastic about everything she saw and heard. And at Banksia, a new-to-them painted horse. Tour with me and together we’ll share Aiken’s history and little extraordinary sights.

Each summer, the Friends of the Aiken County Historical Museum host a summer lecture series as part of their fundraising efforts for the museum.

This year, the series returns to the Woodside Country Club where attendees can enjoy a dinner and a historical talk by some of your favorite local historians.

“No man is an island,” is a quote to which I hold tightly. And because of it my heart is heavy. This week our county was hit with the fact that little Javeayah Harris was murdered and her remains eliminated by her “parents”. Several of our county’s residents have left this world, leaving a hole in the hearts of those who knew and loved them. And then we woke up today to the news that Senator Lindsey Graham passed away. Regardless of whether we knew or didn’t know that sweet child and the others, or whether or not you agreed with Senator Grahams politics , the fact remains that a lives ended suddenly. In all cases there are families and friends that are hurting in ways that can’t be understood unless you’ve lost someone close to your heart. I hope you all join me in praying for those whose lives have been permanently altered by these losses. And pray too that our county and South Carolina can heal and grow from out of this pain.

Here's a bit of interesting history few people know:

One day in 1908, a 12-year-old boy went to a pawn shop and spotted a green stone that really caught his attention. He bought it for 25 cents ($9.05 today). Turns out the stone was an emerald! He turned around and sold that emerald for a whopping $800 ($28,958.26 today) . Now, making a profit of $799.75 at such a young age was not a small feat—but little did he know it was just the first stone into a legacy the world would remember for generations to come. The legacy of Harry Winston, "The King of Diamonds".

I can’t imagine the fear these men overcame and the courage they mustered to storm the beaches on D-Day in order to squash Hi**er and the N**i regime, helping bring an end to WW2. I pray God especially bless the men who are still with us and be extra kind to those who have already met Him face to face.

Today was such a beautiful day for touring and seeing our little extras. We were treated to two thoroughbreds having a restful time at the Willcox Inn (at least one of them, Trumpet, is from Australia). We also witnessed a young hawk cooling his or her talons at the Green Boundary Club before taking flight. Isn’t Aiken grand?🥰

So many times during the year but especially today, Memorial Day, I can’t help but think of the men and women who gave their lives to create and preserve our country and our freedom. Regardless of their social status, race, creed, or political affiliation, those brave souls gave their ultimate sacrifice in order for their generation as well as future generations would live free from dictators, communism, socialism, and the fear of mass extermination. None of us can ever pay them back but we can remembering them and honor them by living in such a way that we keep our freedom alive.
