Vivian Ernest Malpass, age 87, of Hudson, passed away on Monday, February 19, 2024. His beloved wife, Dorothy, passed away the following day after losing the love of her life. They leave behind their devoted children: Sharon Meckes, David (Amy) Malpass, and Kevin (Christina) Malpass. Their loving grandchildren include Liam Meckes, Hadley Meckes, Evan Malpass, Ian Malpass, Brayden Malpass, and Amelia Malpass.
Born on September 5, 1936, in Swansea, Wales, Vivian embarked on a transatlantic journey to West Virginia in 1964 to pursue his professional career in the plastics industry and create a new life in America alongside Dorothy. The Malpass family later found a cherished home in Hudson, Ohio, in 1984, where Vivian continued to cultivate an active life filled with travel, tennis, music, family and friends.
As a distinguished PhD chemist, Vivian's passion for the plastics industry fueled his involvement with the Society for Plastics Engineers (SPE). Viv joined SPE in the late 1960s and held various Board of Director positions throughout the last 50 years including Akron Section President, Akron Section Councilor, Education Foundation Committee member, Distinguished member of the Plastics Pioneers Association, and Chairman of the TPE TopCon. His most significant achievement with SPE was his Presidency of SPE International in 1989.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Vivian was a devoted family man. He ensured that his family learned about their Welsh heritage through frequent visits to friends and family in Swansea. Family camping trips to Myrtle Beach and vacations with the SPE were also part of their shared adventures. Back at home, Vivian and Dorothy enjoyed their extensive tennis group, gardening, and music. Their annual Christmas parties became a favorite tradition, where Viv led the sing-alongs with his piano and accordion.
Vivian truly enjoyed a wonderful life. He was a loving husband, father, and friend. His legacy is etched in the memories of those who were touched by his kindness, his melodies, and the love that radiated from his heart. As we bid farewell, we celebrate the enduring imprint of Vivian Ernest Malpass.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Viv's name to the Akron Society of Plastics Engineers Education Scholarship Fund, PO Box 355, Mogadore, Ohio 44260.
