From bike paths to big cities, the Empire State Trail winds through some unforgettable towns. Here are five worth slowing down for:

🚲 Manhattan, NY – The southern end of the trail kicks off in classic NYC fashion: riverside riding, skyline views, and access to greenways most locals don’t even know exist. A surprising breath of fresh air.
🏛 Albany, NY – The state capital has more than politics - ride past historic architecture, catch a show at The Egg, or cruise the Albany-Hudson Electric Trail just outside the city.
🎷 Saratoga Springs, NY – Known for its performing arts scene, mineral springs, and classic downtown charm. It’s the perfect overnight stop with great eats and even better people-watching.
🟠 Syracuse, NY – This central hub offers a blend of trail access, university-town energy, and nearby lakes. Stop at the Erie Canal Museum or explore the Inner Harbor before heading back out.
🌊 Buffalo, NY – A city of reinvention. Hit the Canalside boardwalk, grab wings at a neighborhood bar, and finish your ride at Lake Erie with a real sense of arrival.

We also highlight where to stay in each spot… because good lodging can make or break a trail day.

There’s something about exploring by bike that sticks with you. The rhythm of the road, the shift in landscape, the quiet moments in between—it all adds up to a deeper way of seeing a place.

Hemingway said it best: “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best.”

If that rings true for you, feel free to share this quote—or drop a comment and tell us where your bike has taken you lately. We love hearing trail stories from this community. 🚴‍♀️

Meet Brendan - one of the many riders who have shared their Trail experience on our site.

Brendan grew up along the Hudson, so it makes sense the Empire State Trail pulled him in. 🚴

He’s biked most of it now and his goal is to finish the entire trail. His favorite stretch? The Albany-Hudson Electric Trail. It runs through Nassau, with stops for pizza, ice cream, and a view or two that’ll make you slow down (even if you’re the type who never does). 🍕🍦

What he loves most: how the trail connects such different parts of the state. “You can start in the rural Hudson Valley and end up in NYC,” he says. “Not many trails deliver that.”

Read Brendan’s full story on our site—and if you’ve got a favorite segment (or snack stop), tell us in the comments. We’re always looking for the next rider to feature!
