✨A (very brief) history of the Old Town neighborhood in ✨

For two centuries, Old Town Albuquerque was known simply as “Alburquerque” (with the added “r”), established in 1706. The was home to generations of original settler families who farmed and traded with the nearby . de Neri , built in 1706 and rebuilt in 1793, is one of the oldest buildings in the city. When New Mexico became a U.S. territory in the 1800s, Old Towners maintained their traditions, foods and as settlers from the East moved to the eastern parts of Albuquerque, up and away from the flood-prone Rio Grande. Old Town remained an autonomous political entity until 1949, when it was annexed by the city to become a preserved district. Since then, the Old Town Plaza remains a beloved site for Albuquerqueans.
