Wednesday, June 3rd, 2026

Good morning, Campers! It's 42° at 0330. We're still boondocking in the Rio Grande National Forest. The high today is 66°. The coach battery was down to 2%, so I went out and started the generator. The moon was bright, casting just enough light to illuminate the wilderness around us. Miles went out for a p*e.

I've been up for a few hours, but I'm only on my first cup of coffee. I'm nibbling peanut butter crackers and watching The Beav. Wally was told that he had a pug nose. I turned it off so I can concentrate on getting thoughts into semi-coherent words. I swallowed a handful of pills a few hours ago, and I'm starting to feel the benefits.

The main propane tank emptied yesterday, so I hooked up a full 20 lb cylinder to the motorhome. I've been using the oven as a heater. I filled it on the 9th when we arrived in Gunnison. On Friday, I'll have it filled again along with a few cylinders. The propane is mainly for heating, and we'll use less as temperatures rise throughout the summer.

This is our 6th and last day here on this spot. We're going to town tomorrow and then relocate on Friday. I have my eye on a spot along Cochetopa Creek on Hwy 114. We're stalling until I want to enter Gunnison National Forest again on the 14th. Legally, I can return on the 9th, which is an option I may exercise. I have a few dates in June to line up to visit with friends, and then we'll return to Gunnison for prescriptions at the end of the month.

The dates are lining up nicely from here unless something throws a wrench into the mix. Going out for 14 days or more is getting easier as we go. Keeping food supplies is probably the most difficult. I have to buy 14 days' worth of food without going back to a store in between.

It's 0400, and the battery is up to 45%. The generator sounds good and is humming along, doing its thing. I haven't checked the gas level in a while, so I won't be surprised if it cuts out. If it does, then I don't have to go out and turn it off.

It's still dark, but I'll go out and take a picture of the rig so you can see what we look like at 0400. Miles and I hope you enjoy your day.

For anyone who lives in their rig and likes to hang out in the National Forest, here's the deal moving forward. Law Enforcement is trying to push a distinction between residing and recreation, regardless of whether you are abiding by their laws. I don't see this wording in the law, so it's probably a stretch of the Forest's overall land-preservation purpose. Instead of going after the side-by-side machines that are tearing up the mountains, they decide to go after old people who live in their motorhomes. I don't have the energy to fight them, so here are the rules I follow.

1. I am here for recreation.
2. I have a physical address and freely show my DL
3. I don't have a mailbox here.
4. My whereabouts outside this Forest are beyond the purview of this discussion.
5. I happily share arrivals and departures within the Forest. I keep a log.
6. I'm a retired veteran with time on my hands, and I'm willing to pursue complaints. I ask if they're sure they want to escalate?

Am I breaking the law? If not, I calmly listen, then repeat this.

Be extremely courteous and as cooperative as possible. Remember, you are on camera. They are trying to intimidate you, so treat it like a game. If threatened or treated poorly, grab your phone, take a picture of the officer and their badge, then file a complaint online.

Pass this on to anyone who should hear it.

2 Forest Service Law Enforcement Officers visited me today. I was suspicious from the start when the Good Cop mentioned twice that they pulled over because I flagged them down. I responded both times that they stopped by my motorhome, and I got out to see what they wanted. They said I flagged them down. Beware of what you post.

There was a good cop, and Officer Michael Hendon was not. I only mention it here because I suspect I know why the hardon for me. At first, I thought maybe it was some "simple mind" on here, or reading my daily journal. More realistically, Mikey knows tricks on Facebook that let him monitor posts mentioning the Gunnison National Forest. He is probably reading this now. It's the same way I sometimes get random PMs from a professional in response to a keyword I posted. National Forest Law Enforcement has investigative access to Facebook and other SM.

I'm being harassed for no reason and breaking no rules. Mikey told me that the stay limit was zero for people like me who lived in their motorhomes! OK, ashole, it's on!

Intelligence Gathering via Social Media

In addition to using social media to help communicate with the public and conduct further investigations, law enforcement agencies also rely on it for intelligence gathering purposes. This is the use that arguably has generated the most questions from policymakers, analysts, and the public. There have been questions about the extent to which law enforcement is actually using social media for intelligence gathering, how they might store and use such information, whether this intelligence gathering can hinder First Amendment-protected activities, whether social media monitoring may undermine privacy rights, and whether intelligence gathering disproportionally affects certain individuals or communities.

We tapped into the reserve water today. I use my old cracked containers to store water and siphon it into newer containers for filling the motorhome. I use my water bandit to hook up a short hose. With a controlled bowling swing, I can place it up on the ladder and let gravity do its thing. I used to use pumps, but this is quicker.
