New Mexico has a longstanding history with wine. In fact, the area now known as New Mexico is the oldest wine-producing region in the country. In 1629, Spanish priests planted the first grapes in this area to produce sacramental wine.

Today, the winemaking tradition continues. In the Albuquerque area oenophiles can enjoy a glass of red, white or bubbly at local wineries such as D.H. Lescombes Winery & Bistro, Casa Rondeña Winery, Gruet Winery and Vara Winery and Distillery. Noisy Water Winery and Sheehan Winery also have tasting rooms in Old Town. Little Bear Nob Hill has a great wine bar that opens in the evening and the brand new Wine Studio by Viva Vino brings not only wine, but a little bit of education about the storied drink as well.

We just launched a new wine pass so you can explore these wineries for free!

Did you know about this hidden gem in Albuquerque? ☎️

At the Telephone Museum of New Mexico (110 4th St. NW) you can check out the evolution of communication technology from tin cans to texting.

It's the perfect place for anyone who's ever wondered how people communicated before emojis.

In addition to amazing exhibits and antique tech, many of the volunteers worked for the Bell System telecommunications company, so visitors can hear firsthand experiences of working in the industry.

✨A (very brief) history of the Old Town neighborhood in Albuquerque✨

For two centuries, Old Town Albuquerque was known simply as “Alburquerque” (with the added “r”), established in 1706. The plaza was home to generations of original Hispanic settler families who farmed and traded with the nearby Pueblos. San Felipe de Neri Church, built in 1706 and rebuilt in 1793, is one of the oldest buildings in the city. When New Mexico became a U.S. territory in the 1800s, Old Towners maintained their traditions, foods and agriculture as settlers from the East moved to the eastern parts of Albuquerque, up and away from the flood-prone Rio Grande. Old Town remained an autonomous political entity until 1949, when it was annexed by the city to become a preserved historic district. Since then, the Old Town Plaza remains a beloved site for Albuquerqueans.

Together again! After a few years out of state, the 128-foot La Ristra special shape balloon is back home in New Mexico, thanks to Visit Albuquerque and Rainbow Ryders, Inc. Hot Air Balloon Co. It joins Visit Albuquerque’s “Red or Green?” balloon in celebrating our state’s agricultural heritage and authentic cuisine. Fun fact: If this balloon were made of real chile pods, it would make 3,291,428 quart-size jars of salsa!

The annual Lavender in the Village Festival takes place July 26, 2025 from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Balloon Fiesta Park. 💜

This event is a celebration of all things lavender. New Mexico has a long history of producing and working with the purple flower and we have found no shortage of ways to implement its unique scent and flavor. In fact, you can find its presence in locally-made lattes, pastries, soaps, skincare, candles and more.

Celebrate the ever-dazzling and inspiring lavender at this festival. Learn more at the link ➡️ https://www.visitalbuquerque.org/event/lavender-in-the-village/60249/
