🚤 The largest lake sitting entirely inside Pennsylvania is not in the Poconos and not near Erie. It is in Huntingdon County, and it is enormous.

Raystown Lake runs close to thirty miles down a narrow valley between forested ridges, with well over a hundred miles of shoreline once you count every cove and finger. The Army Corps of Engineers built the current dam in the early 1970s for flood control on the Juniata, and what it created looks nothing like a reservoir and everything like a fjord that got lost on its way to Norway. Steep green walls on both sides, deep cold water, and almost no houses anywhere along it because most of the shoreline is public land.

That last part is really the whole thing. There is no ring of private docks and no wall of lake houses. There are marinas, campgrounds, a few rental houseboats, and then miles and miles of nothing but trees coming right down to the waterline. Boaters tie off in a cove for the night. Riders and hikers work the ridge trails above it. People who fish for striped bass here take it extremely seriously.

For a state usually described as mountains and cities and farmland, this is a genuinely surprising place to end up on a Saturday. Have you been out on Raystown, and which cove would you go back to?
