The Big South Fork Natural Arches Road Trip in Tennessee and Kentucky is an 80-mile drive through Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area on the rugged Cumberland Plateau. This route takes you to several of the area’s most impressive sandstone arches. Buffalo Arch sits deep in the woods and looks out over tall cliffs and wide forest views. Split Bow Arch stands close to the road and is known for its rare double-arched shape. The highlight of the trip is the Twin Arches, two of the biggest natural arches in the eastern United States. A loop trail with ladders, cliffside paths, and wide overlooks lets you walk around and beneath them. Along the drive you can also see several more arches, waterfalls, and quiet mountain backroads that make the whole trip feel like a real adventure.

Under the Rock Bridge at Arch Lake in Pickett Civilian Conservation Corps Memorial State Park, everything feels larger than life. Massive sandstone bluffs rise overhead. Natural bridges and arch formations frame the trail. Hidden caves and backcountry routes make this park a dream for hikers who prefer rugged, quiet conditions.

Pickett lies within nearly 21,000 acres of Pickett State Forest and borders the 125,000-acre Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area. The park also protects a powerful story. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) developed much of the area between 1934–1942, building trails, rustic cabins, a lodge, a ranger station, and a 12-acre lake.

And when the sun goes down, the sky becomes the main event. In 2015, Pickett CCC Memorial State Park and Pogue Creek Canyon earned Silver-tier International Dark Sky Park designation—the first state park in the Southeast to receive it. Come for the arches and cliffs. Stay for the stars.

Would you plan this trip for the hike or the night sky? 🎇
