This place has been on my Midwest bucketlist for quite some time, and we finally got to visit the other weekend while we were in Manistique. It was just as beautiful as I imagined! 💚

A few things we learned while visiting:

✨The name means “the big cold spring” in the Ojibwe language & is also known as “Mirror of Heaven”

💧 It’s Michigan’s largest natural freshwater spring

🫧 Over 10,000 gallons of water flow through the spring every minute (you could actually see the springs moving below!)

🌡️ The water stays around 45°F year-round

Definitely one of those places that makes you stop and appreciate how many incredible little wonders there are right here in the Midwest!

Happy National Dog Day to these two goofballs ❤️🐾❤️

While they’ve certainly become more grey over the last 2 years no thanks to their human sister, they are still by my side no matter what.

The first picture is forever my favorite from our time White Eagle Resort a few years back but one of the rare photos that they are both looking at the camera & sitting still 🙈

Vacation mode 💕☀️

This summer feels like a blur between selling our house, living in WI for a few months & renovating our new house.

Turns out a trip to the U.P. was just what we needed to soak up the last bits of summer we have left & Manistque, MI was the perfect place - from the sandy beaches, sound of the waves, family time, & the excitement of exploring somewhere new (to us).

June was big - we moved, worked on the new house, played more golf than I have since high school, & spent lots of time outside!

I’ve hiked these trails more times than I can count, but never as slow as we did today 😂 then again… maybe that’s the whole point? To slow down and experience it through her eyes.

Today’s hike at Whitewater State Park was our first time trying out our 2005 Pathfinder backpack carrier that I found on FB marketplace (dare I say vintage). We still have some adjusting to do, but it already feels so nice being able to explore places the stroller simply can’t.

Everything is finally so green & it feels like summer!

Ever wonder why you see so many bald eagles in the Driftless Region? 🦅

The Mississippi River through the Driftless Region is basically an eagle paradise, year round.

💧 Open water = easy fishing
Thanks to dams and fast-moving sections, parts of the river don’t fully freeze in winter → which means food is always available

🐟 Endless food supply
Fish, waterfowl, and even animal carcasses make this stretch of river a reliable buffet

🪹 Perfect nesting habitat
The towering bluffs and old-growth trees give eagles safe, high nesting spots near the water

🌳 Migration hotspot
The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge is one of the best places in the country to spot migrating (and resident) eagles

That’s why the Driftless isn’t just a stop along the way…
for many eagles, it’s home 🤍
