Five reasons why winter time is the best time to visit southern Illinois!

🌡Temperatures are relatively mild in southern IL through the winter. It’s consistently 5 to 10°F warmer, sunnier, and less windy than central and northern Illinois.

🌳Hiking in the open forest is breathtakingly beautiful. Leafless trees and withered undergrowth provide a spectacular view of the hills and hollers of the Shawnee National Forest. Bonus: poison ivy and ticks are dead!

🍷Wineries and breweries are still open. The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and it’s member wineries don’t stop providing unique experiences and delicious local wine and food!

✨Stargazing is amazing! Cold air holds less hazy moisture than balmy summer air.

🗓Many southern IL cabins have greater availability this time of year and you can book more last minute trips! Hutchins Creek Cabin has also lifted our 3-night minimum for Dec-February!
