Travel Tip: Don't save your camera for the destination.

In Alaska, some of the most memorable scenery happens between the places you're trying to reach. A patch of light on the mountains, wildlife along the roadside, or unexpected reflections in a lake can appear long before you arrive at your planned stop.

The journey is often part of the experience here—so keep your camera close and your eyes open.

For many Alaskans, making the most of summer isn't just a mindset—it's a habit.

With daylight stretching well into the evening, it's not uncommon to see people hiking, fishing, biking, gardening, or simply enjoying time outside long after most would consider the day over. Summer is a season that's often savored here, and many locals take full advantage of every extra hour of sunlight.

If you find yourself wondering why the trails are still busy at 9 PM, you're getting a glimpse of a uniquely Alaskan way of life.

Travel Tip: Not every hazard in Alaska has teeth or claws.

Mud flats along areas like Turnagain Arm can be surprisingly dangerous. What looks like solid ground may actually be deep, unstable silt that can trap people who venture too far from shore.

When exploring Alaska's coastlines, admire the views from established trails, overlooks, and safe vantage points. The landscape here is incredible, but it's always worth respecting the conditions that come with it.

Just a few minutes outside of Anchorage, the Turnagain Arm offers some of southcentral Alaska’s most dramatic scenery — coastal mountains, waterfalls, glaciers, winding streams, and ever-changing tidal landscapes all within a single drive.

Our Turnagain Arm Highlights tour is designed for photographers who want more than crowded roadside stops. We focus on quieter locations, changing conditions, and the kinds of scenes that make every outing feel a little different.

Along the way, there are opportunities to photograph wildlife like Dall sheep, moose, Bald Eagles, and even Beluga whales depending on the season — all while receiving creative and technical guidance from your Alaska Photo Treks guide.

Most people associate Alaska wildlife with bears and moose, but Alaska is also home to the largest Bald Eagle population in the United States, with an estimated 30,000 birds found across the state.

For photographers, they’re one of Alaska’s most rewarding wildlife subjects. Whether soaring above coastal waters, perched high in spruce trees, or gathering along salmon streams, Bald Eagles can often appear when you least expect it — sometimes even within city limits around Anchorage.

It’s not uncommon for wildlife sightings here to happen long before you ever reach a trailhead.

Today in the United States we honor those men and women who died in the military service of their country. Their selfless dedication to the ideals of this country and the Constitution that sustains it is laudable. We all wish their sacrifice was not necessary, but we are deeply grateful that it was made. May their service and dedication be an inspiration for us all.

Anchorage is home to an estimated 1,500 moose, making wildlife encounters a surprisingly common part of everyday life here.

Even more fascinating is that moose calves are typically born within an incredibly short window in mid to late May, with many arriving within just a few days of one another. This synchronized timing helps improve the calves’ chances of survival during their most vulnerable stage of life.

It’s one of the many reminders that even within Alaska’s largest city, the rhythms of the wild are never far away.

Alaska travel tip: don’t rely on the daylight to tell you what time it is.

During the summer months, the extended daylight has a way of stretching the day far beyond what most visitors are used to. It’s surprisingly common to lose track of time while exploring, photographing landscapes, or simply staying outside longer than planned because the light still feels like early evening.

In Alaska, daylight and time do not always feel connected.

APT Guide Highlight-Erica

Erica was born in Massachusetts, but Alaska quickly became home. After spending part of her childhood here and later living on the East Coast, her adventurous spirit eventually drew her back north to the rugged landscapes she loves most.

Over the past 18 years, Erica has lived in several states including Kentucky, Georgia, Colorado, and Texas. Along the way, she developed a passion for photography and capturing the beauty of the places she explored. Her love for wildlife and birding — especially owls — ultimately brought her back to Alaska, where she enjoys spending time outdoors exploring mountains, trails, and wild spaces across the state.

When she’s not out adventuring, Erica enjoys spending time with her husband and their two dogs.

Throughout the year, Erica guides several of our day tours and also leads our Focus on Feathers bird tour as one of our dedicated owl chasers.

Travel tip- keep in mind that wildlife in Alaska isn’t limited to remote wilderness areas. While sightings are never guaranteed, it’s not uncommon to encounter moose and other animals even within city limits. Staying aware of your surroundings is important wherever you are exploring.
