Q: How far can you drive into Denali National Park?

A: There is just one road into the park, and in the summer personal vehicles can drive to mile 15. Beyond that only park buses are allowed. The only exception is for campers who have reservations at the Teklanika Campground.

Q: Can I do Denali NP in a day from Anchorage?
A: Not really, Denali National Park is a 4-5 hour drive from Anchorage (7 hours by train) and to really SEE the park you'll need to continue another few hours inside by way of transit bus or guided wildlife tour. We recommend spending at least one day in Denali NP, making it at least an overnight. There are Denali flightseeing tours that fly roundtrip out of Anchorage if you're really pinched for time.

Need a ride to Seward?

Take the Park Connection, ride in style, and see these friendly faces while you're at it.

Daily scheduled service between Seward, Whittier, Anchorage, Talkeetna, and Denali Park. Pickups and drop offs at the Seward cruise ship dock on most ship days. Daily roundtrip from Anchorage to Seward. Direct transfer to Whittier (no need to "swing through" Anchorage ๐Ÿ˜‰).

Hungry?

If you're like us, you sure can work up an appetite on an Alaska adventure. Here's the lowdown on what you can expect to find to eat and drink while onboard the Alaska Railroad:

โ˜• Wilderness Cafe - Grab-and-go refreshments like baked goods, salads, sandwiches, and both non-alcoholic and adult beverages. Open to all passengers.

๐Ÿฝ GoldStar Dining Room - Sit-down dining with a plated menu. Depending on the route, the dining room serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Open to GoldStar ticketed passengers (meals, all non-alcoholic drinks, and two adult beverages are included in the GoldStar ticket price).

As we head into the first weekend in June (how is it June!?), might we recommend taking a hike?

Saturday is National Trails Day!

Here's to the network of federal, state, and local trails that make Alaska the remarkable hiking destination that it is.

We have a little bit of fresh snow on the mountains here in Anchorage.

Sometimes summer comes in fits and starts!

But that means it's a good time to refresh our travelers on what to pack for their Alaska trip. We have three "rules":

1. Synthetic or wool not cotton - Cotton takes a long time to dry and doesn't hold warmth when wet.

2. Layers are key - Base layer (thin, thermal); medium layer (like a light fleece); outer layer (rain jacket).

3. Sensible shoes - We're not the most fashionable here. Leave the heels and loafers at home and opt for outdoor shoes you don't mind tromping through the elements in!

Special treat for our guests visiting Denali National Park early this summer...new puppies at the Denali sled dog kennel!

And for those of us that aren't up there at the moment, we can enjoy from afar ๐Ÿ˜

This year's litter was born on May 3, 2025 and the puppies are just beginning to explore their surroundings. Check back often to watch them grow!

Here we go...from now through till late August, we won't see true night here in Anchorage!

That means it doesn't get dark-dark at night. Instead, we have twilight. Summer's right around the corner โ˜€๏ธโ˜€๏ธ

And on this topic...a good question recently: "Won't it be dark when my train from gets into Anchorage at 10:15PM?" Nope! It'll still be light, so you'll get to enjoy those gorgeous views the whole way.
