Hey friends!!

Come out and join us with our friends Friends of Eagle River Nature Center this Sunday for a nice Sunday stroll while learning about crepuscular animals and the delights found in the boreal forests of Alaska during winter.

This is an entry level hike and will be pretty low intensity. Expect snow, and if you have micro-spikes bring them. If not, don’t worry we have plenty.

Explaining hoar frost vs. rime ice. 📖

Here you see examples of hoar frost. These alders developed ice crystals during a period of calm, clear nights over the past few weeks. Humid air skips the droplet stage and goes straight to crystallizing. When the sky is clear, like is has been, the temperature quickly drops since no clouds are providing insulation. ❄️

Rime ice on the other hand is formed during freezing fog when wind speeds are high. It can be hard or soft, and appear sugary or spiky. 💨
