Sitting at the northern edge of Prince William Sound, Valdez became a cornerstone of Alaska’s industrial backbone in 1977 as the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. Every day, crude oil moves from the North Slope, 800 miles south, to tankers that load in these waters.

The harbor stays ice-free year-round, protected by steep terrain that shields it from open Gulf conditions. That geography made Valdez more than a town, it made it essential.

Named after U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward, the town quickly became a critical gateway between the coast and Interior Alaska. Its ice-free port made it essential for freight, rail expansion, and eventually the growth of Anchorage and beyond.

Seward didn’t just grow by chance. It was built as a starting point.

By day, you can see Cook Inlet, the mudflats, the grid of downtown, and the Chugach standing guard to the east. By night, the terrain disappears and the city becomes a pattern of light. The runway edge lights, approach systems, and street grids taking over where mountains fade out.

West Anchorage is one of the few places where a single flight path can show you glaciers and city lights within minutes.

Descending into Anchorage is one of the few flight paths where you can overfly vast, untouched glaciers and subsequently land in the heart of a city all within minutes.

From Cook Inlet oil rigs in the heart of winter to the rare, balmy summer day in Nelson Lagoon, you'll be comfortable! We have two heaters onboard and one air conditioner which seems like an appropriate ratio for Alaska.

This photo was taken on a drop off of our environmental engineer friends in Pilot Point. Field trips in Alaska look a little different. It takes boots, good planning, and planes that show up when they say they will.

Same airplane. Very different assignments.

The Navajo doesn’t care if it’s parked in fireweed, gravel, tundra, or coastal weather that can’t make up its mind. It’s built for flexibility, consistency, and showing up where runways are more suggestion than guarantee.

From St. Michael to Nelson Lagoon to Pilot Point to Valdez, this is what utility flying actually looks like. Not scenic for the sake of it. Scenic because that’s just where the work happens.

March brings the light back to Alaska.
Longer days, softer horizons, and miles of quiet air.
This is the view from the cockpit above Cook Inlet. tides run hard, weather moves fast, and you learn to read the sky as much as the instruments. Here, most of the state is still sleeping. instruments steady, coffee cooling, and another stretch of sky ahead.

Loading up in Deadhorse isn't glamorous. It includes pallet loads of groceries, inspection crews, and LOTS of mud. After careful Bobcat maneuvering, thoughtful weight distribution, and a tight cargo net are ensured, we blast off across the coastal tundra overhead caribou, polar bears, and plenty of hungry slope workers thinking about their next big buffet meal at camp.

Back in Anchorage after a full day of Katmai and Lake Clark doing what they do best.
Flight hours that feel like minutes, layered weather, and a lot of quiet, beautiful moments that photos can't possibly capture.

These trips aren’t about checking boxes. They’re about moving people safely through places that still run on timing, judgment, and respect for the conditions.
