It's been some time coming, I think, but I'm making it official: I've decided to take a hiatus from Inkstand.

As most of you know, I work a day job unrelated to editing, and we recently purchased our first house. There are so many hobbies I want to start or take up again, and there are only so many hours in the day. Truthfully, I've been burning myself out these last couple years.

I love editing, and I'll still take on some projects here and there (especially if I've worked with you before). I'll also stay involved in the local editing community and keep learning. With any luck, I'll be back to more regular editing work in the near future.

Thank you all for your support these last four years. It means more than you'll ever know. ❤️

Hey all, there's soon to be a new bookstore in town! Black Garnet Books, owned by Dionne Sims, will be the only Black-owned bookstore in Minnesota. She also says that "Black Garnet Books will primarily stock YA and Adult literature exclusively written by authors of color, with a priority toward Black voices." Sounds awesome!

She's raising money to get off the ground, so if this is something you're interested in, click through to the Go Fund Me below.

"The loss of a building or even an entire business is nothing compared to the loss of life that set off the current unrest—not only George Floyd’s death but the deaths of so many Black Americans who have been killed by police and as a result of inequities and injustices in our legal, healthcare, educational, and other social systems. That should be our first priority, and there are a lot of great ways to get involved even if you can’t donate money or show up to events in person. . . . But that doesn’t mean we can’t also be sad about this and want to support Uncles owner Don Blyly in his recovery efforts."

The dual bookstore burned to the ground in the early hours of May 30, 2020.

Many of you know I live in a suburb of Minneapolis. My "day job," until recently, was in Uptown. I love Minneapolis, I love Minnesota, and my heart is broken by George Floyd's murder and the events that have transpired since.

Minnesotans are finally confronting the systemic racism in this country, in our state, in our communities. Some of us are learning how privileged we are to not have noticed it before. The question now becomes how we work to create change.

As a white person, I am taking this time to listen to people of color, to educate myself on how to be anti-racist, and to donate to organizations that can make an impact in our communities. We can all work together toward a more just society.

- I found this article helpful: https://medium.com/equality-includes-you/what-white-people-can-do-for-racial-justice-f2d18b0e0234. There are so many options here that no matter where you're at, there's probably something that's actionable for you.

- This is a great list of book recommendations: https://twitter.com/Amadeus_CV/status/1266072615434825728. I've started reading one of these, and have another on order.

Be safe, friends.❤️

The Minnesota Book Awards ceremony took place last week (virtually). Have you read any of the winning books?

(I had the pleasure of proofreading one of the winners, and I'm over the moon to see it recognized!)

Congrats to all the winners and finalists!

I'm delighted to say that another book I worked on, Where Water Collides with Stone, was released this week! Timothy McDonnell - Author is a wonderful nature writer, and makes the transition to fiction seamlessly. If outdoors fiction and coming-of-age stories are your thing, consider checking this one out.
