Boating safety starts with being ready for anything. A safe day on the water depends on more than just having life jackets onboard. Operators should constantly monitor weather and water conditions, stay aware of nearby vessels and navigation markers, ensure safety equipment is working properly, and be prepared to respond to emergencies if they arise.

Conditions can change quickly on the water, so staying alert, prepared, and informed helps protect everyone onboard and around you.

Days 3, 4, and 7 of all highlight important boating safety reminders!

Before heading out on the water, always let family or friends know where you’re going and when you plan to return (just in case). And while you’re on the water, remember: just like driving, never boat under the influence, and always pay attention to your surroundings.

As the boat operator, you’re responsible not only for your own safety, but for the safety of everyone around you. Safe boating is a shared responsibility, and mariners should always look out for one another.

IIt’s Day 2 of , and today’s focus is a critical piece of boating safety equipment: the Engine Cut-Off Switch (ECOS).

An ECOS is a safety mechanism designed to immediately shut down the engine if the operator falls overboard. This simple but essential device helps prevent runaway vessels and reduces the risk of propeller strikes, protecting everyone on the water.

Whether your boat uses a traditional lanyard, wristband, or wireless key fob, making sure your ECOS is properly connected is one of the easiest and most effective ways to stay safe and maintain control at the helm.

Yesterday marked the start of , and the first priority is the most important one: Always wear your life jacket. Not all vests are created equal! Life jackets come in five different categories (Types I through V), including modern inflatable options for those 16 and older. To ensure you’re protected, verify that your jacket has a USCG approval number and a snug fit—all straps, buckles, and zippers should be fully secured. The USCG requires all children 13 and younger to wear a life jacket while the vessel is underway.

The American Boating Congress (ABC) brought industry leaders together in Washington, D.C. over the past few days to advocate for the future of recreational boating and marine finance. We’re proud to have our President, Karen Trostle, representing National Marine Lenders, Sterling Acceptance, and the marine industry.

Thank you to everyone who participated, met with members of Congress, and helped elevate the important conversations, concerns, and priorities impacting our industry.

The 2026 American Boating Congress (ABC) was held in Washington, D.C., from May 4-6, 2026 bringing together industry leaders for three days of advocacy, policy briefings, and networking to shape the future of recreational boating.
NMLA was represented by current President Mike Stodolak (Independent Bank) and past Presidents Karen Trostle (Sterling Acceptance Corp), Don Parkhurst (M&T Bank), and Jim Coburn (The Coburn Consulting Company) and was proud to again co-sponsor the event.

For a recap of the issues discussed, plan to join Don Parkhurst and guests at 2:00pm on May 19, 2026 for NMLA’s Legislative webinar.
