Never saw this one coming! 💥 💥 💥 💥

While cleaning up for the day a true unicorn fossil was poking out of the dirt. Behold- a molar... TIME!

A late Miocene, semi-aquatic beast, teleoceras resembled modern hippos, with short legs, a broad chest and a single, small horn on its snout. These fossils are the creme de la creme of Miocene mammalian fossils from Florida... and you know what they say...where there is one...there is bound to be more 🪏

Another exemplary specimen of a very cool fossil!

In ancient Florida, there was an extinct, giant 6+ foot armadillo that weighed about 500-600 pounds. This particular species is collectively known as Holmesina.

Holmesina had hundreds and hundreds of the bony scutes making up it's carapace in various geometric shapes, such as the one pictured. These dermal osteoderms, or bony armor scutes, protected the animal from its enemies.

The fossil evidence suggests that these animals migrated from South America by way of a land bridge to North America, starting in the late Pliocene period. Most of them that are recovered in our region stem from the Pleistocene, or Ice Age.

There has been more armadillo fossils discovered in Florida than any other place in North America. They are always an exciting find on a Peace River dig! ✌️
