Choose your bed arrangement. Apart or together?

Most cruise cabins feature a particular type of bed designed to be flexible. You can choose either two twin beds (with nightstands placed in between), or you can choose a single King-sized bed. In this configuration, the cabin steward pushes the two beds together and places the nightstand table on either side. Then, usually, a special mattress topper goes over the crack between the beds to properly join them into one smooth surface.

Watch out when booking, though. Some rooms (often suites) come with a slightly larger King that cannot split into the two twin beds! And some rooms (such as social insiders on Virgin, or the lowest category of interiors on Carnival) have only twin beds that cannot be joined together!

Choose your dining time. Cruise ships generally have two fixed dining times to choose from. (I say generally because some larger ships have three fixed dining times, and most also have the option of walk-in meals only. Norwegian Cruise Line, in fact, has ONLY the option for walk-in meals!)

Once you select your dining time, your dinner will be served at that time each night of the cruise, at the same table, with the same wait staff. This is one of my favorite parts of cruising! Your assigned wait staff will get to know you over the course of the cruise, and get to know your preferences. From a custom fruit bowl of only watermelon to a second glass of wine that appears like magic during the main course, the level of service is just elevated by these amazing crew members getting to know you over time.

I love the ice shows on Royal Caribbean ships. They are smaller than the big theater shows, but it is such a fun, unique thing for a cruise ship. And the skaters are so talented!
