Vermont was recently awarded a $25K federal grant to combat white-nose syndrome in bats. Bats are crucial to our nation’s farmers and foresters, helping control pest insects such as beetles and locusts, saving farmers at least $3.7 billion per year in lost crop revenue and pesticide savings.

On May 12 from 1:00 to 3:00 Hildene Horticulturist, Andrea Luchini and Batten Kill Watershed CISMA Habitat Steward, Farrah Ashe, will lead a workshop focused on: the identification and removal of common invasive plants; how to choose alternative ornamentals to plant; and how to turn some invasive plants into tasty food. They will take participants on a tour from the Hildene Welcome Center down the Maple Trail to the Dene, out to the boardwalk, and to the teaching greenhouse. Stops along the way highlight
the vital importance of protecting native plants and tips on how to remove the invasive species that threaten them. Participants will try their hand at removing garlic mustard and gather at the end to taste food made from
invasive plants. $10 for members/$15 for non-members; limited to 15 participants. Rain Date is May 15, 4:00 to 6:00pm.
