Assisi, founded by the Umbrians, flourished as a vital city during the Middle Ages and continues to enchant visitors with its preserved medieval charm. This year marks the 800th anniversary of the death of Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, better known as Saint Francis of Assisi. Construction of the Basilica di San Francesco began just 18 months after Saint Francis’ death. Both the lower and upper churches are cultural treasures adorned with magnificent frescoes by renowned Italian masters spanning the centuries. Beneath the lower church lies the tomb of Saint Francis, which was rediscovered in 1818. Another major landmark is the Church of Santa Chiara, dedicated to St. Clare, the founder of the Poor Clares, who is also interred there. Assisi’s rich history is layered and complex, rewarding those who take the time to explore it deeply. If you are visiting Umbria, Assisi is a must-see destination. We are excited to welcome several groups to Umbria this summer and hope you will join us for this remarkable experience.
